One of the most frequent problems in agriculture is the proliferation of weeds that are harmful to crops, until now this problem was solved using herbicides, chemical substances that prevent the proliferation of these herbs but that, in the long run, are very harmful for the enviroment.

Uno de los problemas más frecuentes en la agricultura es la proliferación de malas hierbas que son perjudiciales para los cultivos, hasta ahora este problema se solucionaba utilizando herbicidas, sustancias químicas que impiden la proliferación de estas hierbas pero que, a la larga, son muy perjudiciales para el medio ambiente.

In addition to being harmful, these herbicides are usually expensive and lose their effectiveness over time, since weeds can develop resistance to them, so they are no longer of any use, until now, attempts were made to kill these herbicides using steam and hot water, but they were not very effective because the heat dissipates quickly and does not fulfill its function.

Además de perjudiciales estos herbicidas suelen ser costosos y con el tiempo perder eficacia ya que las malas hierbas pueden desarrollar resistencia a ellos con lo que ya no sirven de nada, hasta ahora se intentaba acabar con estas hierbas utilizando vapor y agua caliente pero tampoco eran muy eficaces debido a que el calor se disipa enseguida y no cumple su función.

Now a new study by British agricultural company Weedingtech has developed Foamstream, a liquid foam made from vegetable oils and sugars that, mixed with hot water, can be sprayed using a hand wand directly onto weeds until they are killed.

Ahora un nuevo estudio elaborado por la empresa agrícola británica Weedingtech, ha desarrollado Foamstream una espuma líquida hecha de aceites vegetales y azúcares que, mezclada con agua caliente, se puede pulverizar utilizando una varilla manual directamente sobre las malas hierbas, hasta acabar con ellas.

This foam forms an insulating layer that prevents the heat from dissipating and acting on the weeds long enough so that, through their leaves, it descends through their stems to the roots, killing them effectively, later once they has killed the weeds, the foam dries and biodegrades in the soil.

Esta espuma forma una capa aislante que evita que el calor se disipe y actúe sobre las malas hierbas el tiempo suficiente para que, a través de sus hojas, descienda por sus tallos hasta las raíces, acabando con ellas de forma efectiva, posteriormente una vez que ha acabado con las malas hierbas, la espuma se seca y se biodegrada en el suelo.

In a study conducted by a group of scientists from the Agricultural University of Athens, Foamstream was used to kill mustard weeds (Sinapis arvensis) on selected plots in southern Greece while using other known herbicides as well as other untreated plots to compare the results.

En un estudio realizado por un grupo científicos de la Universidad Agrícola de Atenas, se utilizó Foamstream para eliminar las malas hierbas de la mostaza (Sinapis arvensis) en determinadas parcelas situadas en el sur de Grecia al mismo tiempo que se utilizaban otros herbicidas conocidos así como otras parcelas sin tratar para comparar los resultados.

At the end of the experiment, it was found that Foamstream reduced weeds between 81 and 96%, this would be a performance more or less equal to that of other types of herbicides currently used, such as glyphosate, all without altering anything the environment although, as always, more research still needs to be done.

Al final del experimento, se comprobó que Foamstream reducía las malas hierbas entre un 81 y un 96%, este sería un rendimiento más o menos igual al de otros tipos de herbicidas utilizados actualmente como es el caso del glifosato, todo ello sin alterar para nada el medio ambiente aunque, como siempre, todavía hay que investigar más.
