They have achieved this thanks to the development of a catalyst made from copper and palladium that allows this species of artificial leaf to generate more complex chemical products, simply using sunlight as plants do, without the need to use synthesis gas or other intermediate steps that complicate and make the process more expensive.

Esto lo han conseguido gracias al desarrollo de un catalizador hecho a base de cobre y paladio que permite a esta especie de hoja artificial generar productos químicos más complejos utilizando simplemente la luz solar como hacen las plantas, sin la necesidad de utilizar gas de síntesis ni otros pasos intermedios que complican y encarecen el proceso.

This has not yet come out of the laboratory, but if they succeed, not only would the occupation of agricultural land for the cultivation of bio-fuels be avoided, but it would also be possible to continue using thermal engine technology, since it is a liquid fuel such as used fossil fuels, but totally renewable.

Esto de momento no ha salido del laboratorio, pero si lo consiguen no solo se evitaría la ocupación de tierras agrícolas para el cultivo de bio-combustibles, sino que además se podrían seguir utilizando la tecnología de motores térmicos, al ser un combustible líquido como los combustibles fósiles que utilizan, pero totalmente renovable.
