SLC-S29/W4 – “Thinking and Ideas! | Rethinking the Normal!”
In our society, there is a deeply rooted belief that a person can only be successful if they have a stable job. From childhood, family members, relatives, and society teach us that good results, a good university, and finally a government or respectable job are the only signs of success.
In reality, government jobs are considered the true symbol of success. This mindset has become so normal that people who choose a different path are often seen as uncertain, risky, or even unsuccessful.
However, the definition of success is changing in today’s world, so this traditional idea needs to be rethought.
Name one practice, belief, or system that people accept as normal but should be questioned.
In my opinion, the belief that only a government job defines success is a major social belief that should be questioned. In Bangladesh, many people think business, freelancing, creative work, or entrepreneurship are uncertain, so a secure government job is the final goal of life.
As a result, many young people ignore their own interests and talents and focus only on getting a government job. In reality, some may want to become artists, entrepreneurs, farmers, or social workers. But due to social pressure and fear of failure, they often do not get the courage to choose these paths.
People also believe that those without government jobs are not secure. Government employees receive pensions and long-term benefits, while many private workers do not. This makes us wonder whether success should really be judged only by job security.
Why do you think people rarely challenge it?
Government employees also find it easier to get married. Many families prefer a groom with a government job, and many girls also prefer such partners. As a result, people in other professions often face delays and difficulties in marriage and family life, even if they are capable and good individuals.
Moreover, our education system focuses mainly on job preparation. Creativity, technical skills, and entrepreneurship are given less importance. Because of this, people follow traditional paths instead of trying something new.
What could improve if this “normal” way changed?
People would feel more confident and satisfied because they could follow their passions. Social respect would also become more balanced, and different professions would be valued equally. Social respect would also become more balanced. Marriage and family life would not depend only on government jobs.
Traditional education might also change, encouraging technical skills, creativity, and practical knowledge instead of blind competition for certificates and government positions. This could also reduce pressure on government jobs.
What might be lost if it disappeared completely?
If this belief disappeared entirely, some negative effects could appear. Stable jobs provide security and balance for many families. Stable jobs provide financial security for many families, and not everyone is ready to take risks. If everyone chooses risky paths, financial uncertainty and social instability might increase.
However, it is also true that a job alone cannot define success. The mindset of looking down on others because they do not have government jobs should end. Education and social values should change so that different professions receive equal respect.
The goal is not to disrespect jobs, but to expand the meaning of success where jobs, business, creativity, and social contribution are all valued equally.
Conclusion
The idea that only a job means success has existed in our society for a long time, but now it is important to rethink it.
Success is different for different people. For some, it is a job; for others, business, creativity, or social contribution. Because of our narrow focus on government jobs, we are unable to move forward in many creative fields.
Therefore, we should not force the younger generation into one fixed path. Instead, we should respect their dreams and skills and encourage technical education and diverse career choices so they can grow beyond traditional limitations.

What you've brought up is highly relevant to the current situation in Indonesia. Developing and developed countries have different mindsets about work. People, especially the younger generation, interpret government jobs as prestigious and a comfortable, secure profession for old age.
In reality, their salaries don't exceed the average street vendor's income. There are certainly compelling reasons behind their strong interest beyond prestige. However, I'm a little skeptical about whether government employees truly define their profession as public servants, with salaries and work benefits to provide services and find solutions.
Returning to the issue you raised, success isn't limited to a job or available employment opportunities. and that's right!! When logical thinking is enhanced, a person will identify their strengths and then maximize them practically to create jobs suited to their abilities and skills. Perhaps this is one of the concepts of intelligent reasoning that transforms or rejects normality as a myth of success.
I wish yousuccess in great challenge, Mr. @sohanurrahman 🙏

Hi @sohanurrahman, welcome to thinking and ideas week 4
Wow, only government work determines that a person is successful, this must be a very serious case in your country. OMG, it means there are no skill developers, or talent workers because everyone would love to be successful, hence the government job. This should not be seen as normal at all.
I have a question, maybe you can help me. Your (alleged) granddaughter introduced herself a few days ago. However, there has been no reaction from you so far, no welcome, no vote, no comment as to whether you know her.
May I ask why?
