StuffIt SteemIt - Or Not? Somethings I Learned About Myself & Steem.

in #steemit10 years ago (edited)

Dear SteemIt - StuffIt.

I landed in this mess of SteemIt 9 days ago. I came at an interesting time, the trending pages were filled with -Bloggy Bob and I already have a successful blog with 1 million zillion followers.  Of course the Whales want the big name bloggers, so they were rewarding those new bloggers, who have proven they can write interesting content.  So interesting that enough people follow what they have to say. Their being here does provide value.

For the first few days, I read, I wrote I tested the waters, I made comments.  On a couple of occasions I made comments I regretted, I have flagged twice, not that it meant anything because my vote doesn't count for much up or down, but I regret both flags as well.  The reason I came here was for unfiltered, uncensored reading and writing.

I had to learn how to upload photos via third party software.  (odd)  I know it has to do with the blockchain or something, but an odd experience.

Being a consultant that works with startups and partly because I was interested in the business model and how it all works.  I read the white paper and some reviews of it both positive and negative.  I was interested, and a lot of it is just slightly over my head.

Right from the start I felt irritated with the whole quality content focus.  I read all the articles on how to write, right.  In order to catch a whales eye.

(Gratuitous Art Required Here) (I don't know why.)  (It's free and legal)

I started reading about Whales and Minnows, and the voting plot.  I watched conversations between people in the comments, and I just don't care for the interface.  (Many years ago when I worked for a young tech company, I used an interface just like this to update our websites.)  I watched some flag wars, and then the debate on flagging.  I took note of the culture.  I tried to write better content, and I felt kind of resentful.

Each time I posted I was sure "this one" would get noticed.  I would reload my browser to see how many votes I had.  (never very many)  I thought this was Social Media, not writing 1o1.

In the past 9 days the chainblock went down. Many of those who were just big enough to help me quit, and there was this constant drone, of hey. the whales are doing this or that.  Fixing Exchange prices, swapping Steem, powering down but not loosing their super special weighted voting power.

I'm not interested in fishing for whales, and I don't write college level essays for fun.  For me social media is supposed to be fun!   It is about having something to say and knowing who will read it.  It is about staying in contact with my friends and family, and on twitter sometimes, I get to argue with the TV and other people watching it online!  (Hate to tell you this, but computer techs and whizzes are not only not fun to me, they are also not the best curators for a social media platform, AND they also have an agenda, and the power to bring success to those included in their agenda.  I am not saying "it isn't fair" or am I mad or pissy.  I just don't really want to spend my social time writing fussy or sassy little essay's and waiting to see if they get posted on.  If that is your thing, by all means do it!

Now comes the beauty of the whole thing.  I don't think they can ban me, so I will write and do what I want and if some of it gets voted on that is great.  I will be visiting FB and Twitter often where I can play with my friends.  :)  I will not be getting rich or investing in SteemIt.  I will watch and participate to whatever degree it feels interesting to me.

Just think how this all got started, some kids said...
Let's make a new money!
What?
Yeah, let's just make one up and as long as people like it and agree to spend it and accept it-  as currency, it will be money.  And so it was.
N
ow that is cool and interesting.  Is it fair? No, my Dad said life isn't fair.  I believed him.  Is it shady.  I don't have the technical knowledge to prove it, but it looks a little shady.  But shit when they let you make up a money who's complaining.

I will see you tomorrow or the next day when I get curious how it is all going.
Vote if you feel like it.. Or not.  Steem if you like or not!  It's a free country.

Cool
I am having issues with the blogging
It will not let me post
I even touch a button in the blog post section
and it causes My computer to crash
I wasted about 8 hours
I feel weird about all this stuff
Hope I can decide right away what is right?

Hmm, weird about your inability to post. Doesn't sound like something you could get a screen shot of?

I cannot post either. The place where you input the title of whatever you are submitting is now hidden beneath a bar displaying those categories like 'hot', 'new' etc. This means I cannot enter any titles and so cannot create a valid post.

OK, after a great deal of time trying to coax the title bar out from beneath the other bar that hides it, I did eventually succeed in adding a title. But it is now incredibly difficult to do and enourmously frustrating.

I found a fix! I have my iPad vertical instead of horizontal and the title bar is visible:)

Fous on quality content in steemit is a good thing and at the same time, it can be fun as well.

Follow up questions.. Why? Why is the focus on quality content a good thing? Other successful social media sites focus on people and connections and not "quality content". If it is important? Why? Is there an audience out there saying I just can't find any quality content on the internet? I am not being sarcastic or an ass, I really want to know who and why this became a goal?

Have a Steemy day!

Also, is haveing 20 people who are mostly techy and bitcoiners determine what is quality content a good idea?

If I post quality articles, more chance to get upvoted

I agree with your point of view. I am now just using this as a platform to have fun on and I link the stuff I write in other social media because I know whatever I write is in the block chain saved. so most the people that see my stuff give it thumbs up, up votes, likes whatever on the site im posting my link to. they don't use steemit so cant upvote my stuff. lol it needs a lot of work, like shouldn't even be advertising it yet because its so horrible still. xD does not feel like anyone is listening to the sugestions either on how to improve the social media aspect of it.

I know everyone wants to talk about minnows and whales, but to me it feels like I send my work out into space hoping an astronaut will happen upon it.

I use an online grammar checker that won't work in this setting, so it is improving my spelling. lol.

he fact that people care so much about grammer and spelling is one huge downfall for a social media platform. a lot of people leave because they just want to be social and make friends. lol

Creating money is the easy part. Getting others to accept it, that is the difficult part.

Right? Time will tell.
