Masjid ini merupakan saksi bisu sejarah Aceh, masjid ini merupakan markas pertahanan rakyat Aceh ketika berperang dengan Belanda. Pada saat terjadi Perang Aceh pada tahun 1873, masjid ini dibakar habis oleh tentara Belanda. Pada saat itu, Mayjen Khohler tewas tertembak di dahi oleh pasukan Aceh di pekarangan Masjid Raya. Untuk mengenang peristiwa tersebut, dibangun sebuah monumen kecil di depan sebelah kiri Masjid Raya, tepatnya di bawah pohon ketapang. Enam tahun kemudian, untuk meredam kemarahan rakyat Aceh, pihak Belanda melalui Gubernur Jenderal Van Lansnerge membangun kembali Masjid Raya ini dengan peletakan batu pertamanya pada tahun 1879.
Peristiwa sejarah yang terakhir adalah terjadinya bencana tsunami 24 Desember 2004. Ketinggian dan derasnya air tsunami yang hampir 2 meter menggenangi ruangan dalam Masjid Raya, menjadi saksi sejarah bagi kebanyakan orang yang selamat ketika berlindung di Masjid Raya. Setelah air tsunami surut, di dalam Masjid Raya dijadikan tempat meletakkan ribuan jenazah korban tsunami.
Masjid yang terletak di jantung Kota Banda Aceh ini telah melewati saksi sejarah yang panjang sebelum seperti sekarang. Jika kamu ke Banda Aceh sekarang, maka kamu akan mendapati wajah baru Masjid Raya tersebut, payung-payung elektrik yang menaungi lantai marmar menggantikan hamparan rumput hijau yang dulunya membalut sekeliling pekarangan. This mosque is a silent witness of Aceh history, this mosque is the headquarters of the people of Aceh when fighting with the Dutch. At the time of the Aceh War in 1873, the mosque was burned down by the Dutch army. At that time, Major General Khohler was shot dead in the forehead by the Aceh forces in the yard of the Grand Mosque.
