Beautiful places of the planet: Chaves
Chaves is a small but very famous town located in the north of Portugal just a few kilometers from the Spanish border. Officially, it was founded back in 1258, and received its name due to the large number of thermal springs found in this area.
Ponte de Trajano
Today the bridge is in good condition and connects two important areas of the city. The length of the bridge is 140 meters. The bridge consists of 12 arches and is a magnificent example of Romanesque building art.
Castelo de Monforte
Castle Montfort is located in the northeastern part of the city of Chaves. Since 1950, the castle is listed as a monument of national importance.
Torre de Menagem
The military museum of the city of Chaves is located in the tower of the Menagem - the surviving part of the city castle. The surviving tower of the Menagem is square, the top of the tower is provided with loopholes. The height of the tower is 28 meters. In 1938, the castle was added to the list of monuments of Portugal of national importance.
Forte de Sao Neutel
The construction of the fort was begun in 1664 in order to repel possible attacks from Spain during the Portuguese war of independence, which lasted from 1637 to 1668
Forte de Sao Francisco
The fort was designed by Vauban, in the shape of a quadrangular star. The walls are made of granite with a thickness of 1 meter. The height of the walls varies due to the slope on which the fortress is built; the highest wall reached 20 meters in height.
Igreja de Santa Maria Maior
This beautiful building of the XII century was built in the Romanesque style.
Igreja da Misericordia
The granite facade of the church is decorated with the Virgin of Mercy, which looks down at ten figures and covers them with its mantle.
