Railway Journey to the Top of Europe - 3454 meters Above Sea Level - Jungfraujoch in Switzerland

Moving swiftly on from the Snowdon mountain railway journey I shared earlier in the week:

I have another unique railway station to introduce to travel rail enthusiasts, the "Jungfraujoch", which sits an astonishing 3454 meters above sea level.

Snow capped Jungfraujoch is Switzerland and Europe's highest railway station, it was completed in 1912 and is often referred to as the "Top of Europe", offering sensational views of the surrounding Alps and Aletsch glacier.

Jungfraujoch station is hewn out of the mountain rock.......

After exploring the maze of tunnels, exhibits and gift shop within the station, you can hop on the train and head to the next stop down the mountain, namely Eismeer (Sea of Ice) which is 3,160 metres above sea level.

Here's a beautiful view of a glacier from the viewing area at Eismeer railway station:

After a couple more brief stops at Eigerwand and Eigergletscher, the red train trundles through the tunnel and emerges into the sunlight:

The mountain pass of Kleine Scheidegg will soon be within reach, and from there you can head to popular tourist destinations including Interlaken, which is a hub that can be used to launch out to other places in Switzerland such as Lauterbrunnen, and Bern.

I hope you enjoyed reading about this unique railway destination.

Went up about 20 years ago, awesome experience!

Cheers, yes it's definitely worth a visit! Did you stay in Interlaken when you visited in the 90s?

We actually stayed in Zurich and took the train out there. Being a South Afrcan I am too scared to think what it will cost to go and revisit it due to the poor value of our South African Rand!

I hear the Capetown to Kimberley train is a great journey in your neck of the woods, although it's 615 miles compared to the Jungfraujoch route which is about 6 I think.

Thanks for reading, have you ever been to Jungfraujoch?

I was there last year :) Stunning view!
