Sounds like the people you met were pretty fantastic (and forgiving). Canberra is a hole; and colder overnight than anywhere else I've ever been. The only thing better than driving straight through it, is driving around it.
Glad you're fleshing out your trip; always nice to see Australia through someone else's eyes; also I haven't spent much time on the East coast so don't know many of these spots.
