Night walk through the city
The best thing about winter is that if you want to shoot night photography, you don't have to wait until late at night ‒ late afternoon is dark enough.
Night shots often have a distinct color cast that might look unrealistic to some people. The thing is, the human eye (and brain) sees colors the way it's used to seeing them, while a camera sensor captures them exactly as they are. (Then the camera software tries to adjust them to how they’re supposed to look).
For this shoot, I dialed in my settings so I could shoot handheld without a tripod. I kept the shutter speed between 1/30 and 1/60, aperture at f/2.8, and pushed the ISO anywhere from 2000 to 6400 depending on the light. I actually had a tripod on me, but I just didn't feel like setting it up.
I snapped a few streets downtown. As you can see, the Christmas decorations are already up in some spots. Sure, Christmas is still a month away, but hey, why leave things for the last minute?
To really get into the holiday spirit, I’m sipping on some xmas cherry punch while writing this. (Though it’s definitely still too early to start singing carols 😊.)
