You can travel there in June or July.”, In this article I will discuss the traffic plan in New Zealand. The following transportation tool option can save you at least US$500. In New Zealand, about the traffic and accommodation part, we usually need to think the traffic first, because New Zealand’s bus and train system is not very developed. There aren’t a few buses a day, so if you want to save time waiting for transportation tool, or you’re afraid to miss the bus, or you want have more free action, car rental is the first choice.

I make the first conclusion directly: In winter, my advice is to rent a car and not to rent motohome. This is the most economical, safest, simplest and most comfortable.

I don't recommend renting motohome in winter. Because after a lot of my research, short-term motohome rental is not safe, not convenient and not cheap.

The first reason is that the winter is sometimes snowing. The body of the motohome is relatively large, so its response will be relatively slow. If you don’t have much experience in driving motohome, it is not easy to control the steering wheel. It is also easy to accidentally collide with other cars when the car is moving or parking. So when you park the motohome, it is the best way to let someone get off the motohome and see the distance with other cars.

In addition, when the weather is not good or the ground is freezing, it is relatively easy to cause slippage and more dangerous. If you drive long distances in New Zealand, with driving a motohome this size car, it will be a very tiring thing.

The second reason is that the weather is cold and it may snow in winter. You cannot sleep without heater, so you must stay in campsites in a private camping area with serious management which provide electricity. Using the electricity to turn on the heaters in car to sleep.

In general, such campsites have a power site that costs between 40 to 60 NZD per night, plus the more expensive cost of renting a motohome, it will cost a lot. In fact, compared with the plan we will discuss in the third article in the next few days, this accommodation plan(motohome+ power site of campsites) will not be cheaper, it will be more expensive.

The third reason is that the cost of renting a motohome is relatively higher, and the overall insurance premium for a motohome is also high. Usually when we buy the auto insurance, we buy the overall insurance premium or choose the 0 excess of the loss damage waiver, so that you do not have to pay when there is some small damage of your rental car.But it has a limit.

In the trip, there maybe some scratches caused by you driving the motohome unfamiliar, or traces of gravel produced by poor road conditions, weather conditions, slippage, or wind sand. If you do not buy the 0 excess of loss damage waiver option, You maybe have to pay for these scratches or traces of gravel when you return the motohome.

take the photo above for example, if we want to rent a motohome in Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand for 10 days, the stress-free cover(the 0 excess of the loss damage waiver) of the motohome rental of the famous brand costs 30 NZD per day.

In the moment of returning the motohome, it may have many problems and disputes and delay the travel time. Not to mention that there is a minimum number of days for renting a motohome. If your rental days is not reach the minimum number of days of rental, the price of your rental motohome will be similar to the price of a minimum number of days of rental, so it will also increase the cost of renting a motohome.

The fourth reason is that, in fact, it is very laborious to rent a motohome. When we arrive the camp , it is still necessary to clean up the sewage and the poop buckets which we used in the daytime. In New Zealand, finding public toilets along the way would not be too difficult, and it would not be unclean.

In short, renting a motohomes is an experience. But in the winter, renting a motohome is not as safe, simpler, cheaper and more comfortable than renting a car. So I think that renting a car in winter is the best choice. In addition, Renting a motohome may be more expensive during summer or Tourist season, and it is not easy to rent.

在纽西兰，通常交通跟住宿的部份要先考量交通，因为纽西兰的公车跟火车系统并不是非常发达，一天没有几班公车，所以如果想要节省等待交通工具的时间，担心错过公车时间，或是自在的行动，租车会是第一选择。

直接作第一个结论：冬天的话，我的建议是租轿车，不租露营车。这样最省钱，最安全，最简单以及舒适。

我不建议在冬天的时候租借露营车。因为在我研究许多之后，短期的租借露营车，其实并不一定是安全，方便跟便宜。

主要第一个原因是冬天有时候会下雪，露营车的车身比较大台，所以它的反应也会比较慢，如果你没有太多驾驶露营车的经验，不是很容易去控制方向盘，太大的车当移动或停车时也很容易不小心跟别的车擦撞，停车时最好有人下车看一下跟别的车的距离。

同时当路况天候不好或是地面结冰，也比较容易造成打滑，反而比较危险。并且如果开长途距离，开大车会是件非常累的事情。

第二个原因是冬天天气冷，又可能下雪，睡觉不开暖气是会睡不着的，所以一定要进驻私立的有认真管理的露营区住“提供电力的”的露营地，开车上的暖气才能睡觉。一般这样的露营区有提供电的（Power site）每晚也要在40到60块纽币之间，加上租露营车的较贵的费用，其实相较未来几天我们会在系列三讨论的住宿方案，并不会比较便宜，还会更贵一些。

第三个原因是租露营车费用也相对较高，露营车的全险保费也较高。通常车险都是要保全险，这样就会是零自付额，也就是车子有所小损伤时不用赔偿，但有一個上限。

因为如果不保全险，旅行中任何不熟悉驾驶露营车所产生的擦伤，或是因为路况，天候不好，打滑，或碎石及风砂产生的的痕迹，因为没有保全险，还车的时候可能会产生多余的赔偿费用。可能在还车的当下会有很多状况跟纠纷，耽误旅游的时间。更何况租露营车还有一个最低租赁天数的限制，没有达到最低的租赁天数，租车价格也会跟最低租赁天数的价格差不多，所以也可能会提高租露营车的费用。

上圖以六月去纽西兰南岛10天为例，知名品牌的露营车全险费用（免自负额）就是每天30纽币。

第四其实租露营车是很费工的，到营地休息时，还是要清理白天的污水，大便桶。其实在纽西兰，沿路要找到公共厕所也不会是一件太难的事，也不会算不干净。同时，还车也要整理，污水跟大便桶都要清洁干净，这些也都是必要的，但也会花掉不少时间。此外，当我们在城市里旅行时，也比较找不到可以停的车位。

有很多人去到纽西兰会想要租露营车，但可能没有仔细算过交通的经费，旅行回来仔细想一想，光租露营车费用加车子全险（零自负额）保险费加上最低租赁天数，十到十二天左右的的旅程结果就很容易花900到1100纽币在租露营车上，一不小心就比机票还贵。

简单来说，租露营车是一种体验，但是在冬天的话租露营车还是不如租轿车来的更安全，更简单，更便宜并且舒适。所以冬天租轿车是我认为最好的选择。在夏天或旺季时，租露营车可能会更贵，并且还不容易租到。

光这样一个租轿车的决定，就很轻松的帮我们节省至少超过500美金的交通费用。在下一篇，我们会继续讨论，租轿车搭配的高CP值住宿方式，让去纽西兰及去蒂卡波湖变成更轻松简单去完成的的一个绝境旅程计画。

如上图，如果我们想在纽西兰南岛的基督城（Christchurch）租车，举例来说，选择OMEGA公司租车十天，只要103美金，（未包括汽车全险零自负额分案）这个价格是不是会让你眼睛一亮，跟露营车相比是不是划算很多。
