Greetings, this will be my first post about bridges so bear with me.
There is something about bridges that attracts my attention, so I hope I can attract yours :)
Akashi Kaikyō Bridge is the largest suspension bridge in the world, a wonder of japanese engineering and construction. This big beauty connects the city of Kobe to Iwaya (Awaji islands)
The idea to connect the two cities emerged in the end of 1950's as a response to the tragedy which happened in 1955 in the bay of Akashi.
(Collision of two ferries, which claimed more than 160 victims.)
Finally after 3 decades, the bridge was build.
- longest span: 1991m,
- total length: 3911m,
- clearance below: 65,7m,
- height: 282,2m.
The two main towers are based 60 meters below the sea surface. It took seven years to complete the two towers. Then just shortly after a devastating earthquake struck Kobe. The bridge was build to absorbe that and it miraculously withstood the quake.
I think the engineering against nature is mindblowing!
Thanks to 1.737 lights installed all over the bridge it shines proudly in any color. :)
Did you know? You can climb on top of it. This is an actual tour :)
The pictures were sadly taken from the web. here is their sorce:
