in #travel3 years ago

On this second Europe trip, I got to see Paris for the first time. Of course, we had to go to the Eiffel Tower.

Located on the Champ de Mars, the famous wrought-iron lattice tower is certainly Paris's most prominent landmark/tourist attraction. It is also the most visited landmark in the world. In 2015 alone, 6.91 million people visited the structure. The tower was named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company was the contractor for the project. The main men involved in the construction and design of the tower were structural engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, and architect Stephen Sauvestre. Construction of the Eiffel Tower began on January 28th, 1887 and was completed two years later on March 15th. It was built as the entrance for the 1889 World's Fair. The Eiffel Tower stands at 324 meters(1,063 feet) making it Paris's tallest building.

The Eiffel Tower seems like such a cliché landmark to see, and it's how I kind of felt about Paris in general. But, I get it now. I get why people are so mesmerized by the city and why they want to see the tower with their own eyes. It's fascinating. Especially, at night when it's lit up and sparkling. The Eiffel Tower is truly a marvel.
