The H.R. Giger Museum Bar in Switzerland
The name H.R. Giger will not immediately ring a bell for most people. If you mention the movie ‘Alien’ however everybody knows exactly what you are talking about. H.R. Giger was an artist who worked a lot for Hollywood productions such as Poltergeist, Species and of course the Alien saga.

Directors were lucky to be acquainted with his oeuvre long before he ever thought of working on movie sets or creating costumes for some of the most successful movies in horror and science fiction. He had no idea that his artistic work would end up on a movie screen someday.

This man created his own universe with alien monsters within the smallest details. He did not deliver monsters and decors for the movie ‘Alien’, the picture was adapted to his art and was the key to an overwhelming success.

Unfortunately, you cannot talk to this magnificent person anymore, but you can travel and do the next best thing, if you want to explore the mind of a very talented artist, you can visit his museum in the 400 years old castle St. Germain in Gruyeres, Switzerland. Do not expect this to be a normal trip; the museum is what it promises: out of this world! Inside this historical chateau, the interior will send chills to your spine and will freak you out!

Finding the museum is quite easy; you will recognize instantly the bronze stairs that bring you inside the museum created in the form of the tale of the Alien-creature. Once inside you will be sucked into the world of H.R. Giger. Strange looking skeletons will greet you at the entrance. Chairs made of spines are a horrifying preview of what is to come. You will find anatomic bones and body parts that you do not want to think about.

The place is haunted with film memorabilia who looks at you in a creepy way. You can take place in the Alien Room but you will not stay there for long, I am sure.

In another part of the museum, you can get to know the other works of H.R. Giger, like ‘The Birth Machine’ a breathtaking aluminum sculpture and the painting ‘Necronom IV’ that was the blueprint for the Alien creature. On your way out, you can start breathing again and admire the private collection of Giger who collected 600 pieces of the most exquisite art from other fellow artists.

H.R. Giger is one of my main influences! Altough I go often in Switzerland, I only been to the museum a few years ago.
And I have had a really hard time leaving! Would have love to camp around and visit it for several days. Just magnificient!
Also it is so funny to see the tourists eating raclette and fondue in this bucolic castle on a hill then seeing the sign of the museum at the end of the main street, so inviting...
