Little Corn Island, Why I fell in LOVE and why you NEED to VISIT ( you could pay as little as $8 per night)
Little Cron Island!
Little Cron Island, Don't worry, I hadn't heard of it either! so where are The Corn islands?
Hidden in the warm crystal waters of the Caribbean, off the west coast of Nicaragua are 2 tiny islands. Big Corn and of course the Little Corn! Big corn is considered by most as a transit island however still beautiful but its little corn that really steals the show!
So where does little corn get its charm and why Should you GO? here are my top 5 reasons
- IT MUST BE SOMETHING IN THE WATER!!!
Possible the warmest, cleanest and most beautiful water on the planet!
I have seen a good percentage of the tropics (as I tend to chase the sun) from The great barrier reef to the red sea of Egypt
and most of Asia in between but the Caribbean is Special! The crown Jewel! One day while scuba diving off a boat the temperature of the water on my dive watch was 31 degrees (82F) Perfect!!! So much so that I was tempted to not even dive and just stay at the top and enjoy the sun and the water! ( I did dive and didn't regret it ) You can experience the water from one of the many pristine beaches on the islands! which Brings me to point 2
- LIFE IS A BEACH!!
The advantage of being on an island is that you are never far from a beach, BUT more often then not islands will have the post card beaches and then the beaches that no one wants to go to, creating a demand and over populating the beauitful beaches. This is NOT the case on little corn! the island is surrounded by perfect beaches! and they are all very private! The sand white and clean, the water gently lapping against the shore as you lay in a hammock or under palm tree gazing into the rich Blue sky above! The share beauty of the island and the slow island life force you to slow down your own speed and relax! walk slow, sit Long, wake late, nap often, eat too much and swim 10 times a day!
- FOOD!!
How does $6 fresh lobster sound?
If you are a Food Lover like I am you'll find the food on little corn to be surprisingly appetizing for such an isolated part of the world. With new supplies only coming in once a week, the locals have but no choice to take full advantage of the fresh seafood and fruit the island offers in a rich abundance. In fact, it was some of the best food that I had the entire county and also surprisingly some of the best priced!
let's start with breakfast! local options include fresh juice, fruit and a corse of eggs, pinto (local rice and beans) and toast for around $3. Local curries, and vegetable dishes for lunch with always having the option of fresh seafood $6 lobster was a stand out! but the late night street burgers are also recommended!
- LITTLE CORN IS TINY!! NO ROADS, NO TRAFFIC, NO NOISE
If you enjoy the Hype of a big city, the buzz, the noise, the energy (which I do) then little corn will be a shock to the system BUT at least one time in your lifetime you need to experience a community where there are no roads and traffic! The island is small enough to walk from end to end in around half an hour or complete around it in 2 hours! The small island brings with it a slow pace where locals are friendly and happy, travels are tanned and relaxed and more than likely a Dog will make friends with you and follow you to the other end of the island just because! a population of around 1000 people gives brings a rather personal local encounter, where people are generally interested in you compared to places like Bali, Phuket or Cancun where you're just another dollar sign!
- ITS VERY AFFORDABEL!!
That's right! It's still possible in today's world to find a bargain. The corn islands are still somewhat a secret to the world (but this is changing fast) the tourist dollar hasn't hyper inflated the price as yet! during my visit in September 2017 i was paying $8USD per night! Taking full advantage of the cheap food and happy hour drinks, filling my day with exploring the island and bathing in the warm waters after baking in the sun! the point is that you can stay comfortably for under $20 USD a day if need be ( including a lobster dinner)
Bonus!
There is a lookout in the center of the Island near the radio tower that will give you 360 degree view off the island! a vantage point to spot the best beachs, clearest water and secretly the best place to watch the sunset from! i highly reccomecd it! if you do goid love to know what your thought! i might even see you there onday! Intill nextime!
Although its not easy to Get to it is worth it! but getting there is always half the fun!
