BUCKET LIST: My Ancient City of Petra Journey Part 1
Israel to Jordan
So one year ago I went on a trip of a lifetime, a real bucket list type of trip to the ancient city of Petra in Jordan one of the wonders of the world.
It all started when I was visiting Israel’s capital city Tel Aviv. By chance I found out about a company called Abraham Tours who did various site seeing trips in and around Israel…. one of them was Petra.
I chose to go on the 2-day Petra tour, which also included a tour of the ancient city of Amman en route.
Setting off early in the morning from Tel Aviv in a mini bus our tour guide, a charming Jordanian fellow began telling us about what was ahead.
After crossing into Jordan it took another few hours for us to reach our first destination, the city of Jerash.
Jerash was amazing, we went to the old The Roman city of Gerasa, which was filled with tones of Roman artifacts and remnants here are some examples:
The Arch of Hadrian was built to honour the visit of Emperor Hadrian to Gerasa in 129/130 AD.
The Oval Forum
The North Theatre
North Theatre. Jerash, Jordan. This intimate theatre (odeon, seating 800) is oriented to the northeast. It was originally built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD) as the city's council chamber, and later enlarged. Seating was allocated by political and religious castes.
The Jerash nymphaeum
The nymphaeum in Jerash, Jordan was built in 191 AD by the Romans. The fountain was originally embellished with marble facing on the lower level, painted plaster on the upper level, and topped with a half-dome roof, forming a giant niche. Water cascaded through seven carved lion's heads into small basins on the sidewalk.
After the visit to Jerash we got back on our mini bus to continue our journey to Amman where we also visited the Citadel!
