Day 3 in America: Sitting around

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Hi guys

Wonderful to have you here again.

It was the first normal sleep we got since we started our travel.
To sleep 8 hours at once is soooooooo wonderful.

Its our last full day in New York and priority No 1 is getting back our luggage.
As Alena is checking the road for appearing delivery cars through the window, I can go out to buy breakfast for us. Coffee, sandwiches, apples and ready is a small nice breakfast.

Cant imagine to sit behind the window all the time, so lets try something else!
In the back of the house there are plastic chairs at a terrace and in the living room there is a wooden stool that is a bit higher and can be used as a small table.
I just take that stuff and put everything in our 2,5 square meter garden in front of the small house.
HONEY BREAKFAST IS READY!

Thats a very special experience.
Imagine us sitting around more or less on the pavement in a residential district.
More and more people are passing by at the pavement. Most of them smiling at us and greeting friendly.

After having breakfast we started to play cards out there to get rid of the waiting time. People kept passing by, sometimes doing funny comments on our gambling.
One guy around 50 asked us what we play. He would be totally in if we play strip poker and he wants to loose. :) We really had fun there!!

At 11:00 we started to get a bit nervous, so I went to our room and called the delivering company again.
They assured me that they will bring the luggage very soon.
While having the call I heard Alena starting to talk to somebody.

As I headed downstairs again, I saw Alena and some guy (Chris) carrying a cupboard up to the room next to ours. The guy told us that his friend (some girl, don't know how they are related) is moving and that the room next to us is her new room.
Chris had a small bus parked in front of the door with more cupboards, a bed, a mattress and so on.
As we didn't have anything else to do, we decided to help him with all the stuff.

In my opinion, its always the same. Do something good and something good happens to you.
When we finished working, we got some croissants and beer from our new friends.

As I knew that its not allowed to drink alcohol everywhere in the US, I was curious if we are doing illegal stuff...
Chris told me that it depends on the state. In New York and New Jersey you are allowed to drink at your place.
Its not allowed to drink on the street.
So we had to stay inside of our small garden :)

Finally at 2 pm our luggage arrived.
A guy in a jeep brought it to us.
It was like kids waiting for Santa Claus and finally get there presents.

Oh yeah! Fresh stuff. I love it.

So, what to do with this day.
We decided to use the time to see a bit more of New York.
Chris told us that Hoboken at the Jersey side is a very nice place to be.
So we went down to the Hudson river to take the train to the south.
To find the station was easy, but we were totally unable to buy a ticket anywhere. No vendor machines or anything like that. Don't know if its smart to write it here, but we took the train illegally without having a ticket ;)

Hoboken is a very nice place.
Bit older buildings, and lots of small food shops at Washington Street.
In the middle of fast food restaurants and the famous???? Carlo's backery we found a very nice small restaurant called honeygrow. (https://www.honeygrow.com/)
I have never heard of it, but I immediately liked the concept. You can configurate your food out of high quality and healthy ingredients and they cook it fresh for you.
Quite easy and exactly what I like. RECOMMANDATION

Few steps further there is the Harbor of Hoboken.
The old port looks more like a building that could fit to Vienna or another city of the old Austrian monarchy.
I would not have expected it to be in New York (Yes I know it's New Jersey not New York :o)

I felt a bit like at home.

From there we took the bus to Manhattan.
The bad thing about buses in New York is that you have to pay cash and you dont get any exchange.
I didn't know that and so I was stuck at the bus driver searching for coins, only having 10 bucks.
A very friendly older black guy was smiling at me, giving me 2x 5$ as change for my 10$
THANK YOU!

As a small reward I gave him a small present that I brought from home.

He was happy about it and all the bus drive I was chatting with him about travelling the world and so on.
Very interesting man who travelled himself a lot and supporting farming projects in Africa.

Now comes very touristic stuff.
We went to the WTC memorial. It's a very sad place and we left it quite fast.

We walked through the streets of downtown being totally impressed about all the skyscrapers around us.
At the total south of the peninsula we found the old lady waiting for us out there at the sea.

Instead of taking an expensive boat tour to the statue of liberty, we followed a recommendation of a friend of Alena to take the free fairy to staten island.
We enjoyed that so much. Imagine us being on the fairy with lots of people who go there every day.
Most of them didn't care about the statue and just read newspapers and so on.
We were totally thrilled, looking at the different things to see and of course mainly at the statue.

At staten island there is not so much to see.
Maybe the best thing there was this small animal.

On the way back we had this wonderful view.

As we were quite tired, we took the metro back uptown.
To know our place of departure for the next day we went to Penn - station.
Right next to it we accidentally found the Madison Square Garden.
As watching a basketball game was no option that day, we decided to visit the beer garden right next to it.
As I'm used to live in a small town, its a very special feeling to sit in a beer garden, surrounded by skyscrapers.
