RE: Is Dali China's Hippie Town? Is It Worth The Hype?
"not so touristy"
Don't know who told you this, but that's nonsense. I was there in 2009 & it was already very busy. Actually, judging from your pictures, busier than on your trip. (& it was not a national holiday, for what I remember).
The town as such is nice with great surroundings, but the commercialization was just too much. Pretty much every older building had been turned into a souvenir shop.
Don't know whether it's already too late, but I suggest - since you are in the area - to visit Zhongdian (中甸县; Zhōngdiàn Xiàn), which the greedy government renamed to Xianggelila (Shangri-La) to attract even more tourists. You get a taste of Tibet there.
Like Dali, it's a tourist trap, but still worth a visit.
Hey! Thanks for reading and commenting on our post! I guess we didn't really get any 'good' pictures of all the tourists but maybe it isn't as busy now as before. It just felt a bit contrived with all the old buildings selling sourvenirs like you say.
If we go back we will check out 'Shangri-La'. We also wanted to visit Tiger leadping gorge but the weather didn't allow us. Thanks again and see you in the next post.
