CineAtlas 60 | Week 4 - Object as Character | [Unyehe Nsit / Nsit Atai]
It's quite unfortunate that I had to choose the most unlucky of objects that are meaningful, but are seen as worthless. Can you sew a cloth today and burn it that same day or week or month? The object I'm going to make my character is one that wishes he had mouth to speak. Why? The maker cannot use him. The owner doesn't know him and the person who buys him cannot use him.
He is dressed in a beautiful way with expensive wears and adornments, but even at that, he is placed under the ground, 6 feet deep. This is to tell you that wealth is vanity. Let me not go too far. Let the object speak. The object isn't made to kill. It's meant to sacrifice his own life and die with people that have already died. Just imagine that. You were brought into the world only for you to be dead and nothing else.

My object naturally has a lot of houses. He pays rent when his maker makes him. When he's chased out of the house by his maker and sent for slave trade, he stays there for hours and then is locked in prison for the rest of his life till he dies and rot. So I was fortunate to see my object in its second home as a slave, ready to be dead.
So I decided to attend a funeral where I saw three of the objects. His father, mother and himself. They were placed on a table at Unyehe Nsit, Nsit Atai in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. I made my way all the way from Uyo in Akwa Ibom to witness the funeral of the people my objects are carrying inside them.
So the place is a family compound and a funeral ground at that moment where the three caskets were meant to be buried there. This place fits the object because we can see his permanent home, waiting to receive him and it's just so ironic that someone with so much wealth and adornment would be stained with dust and sand. This is a funeral and in funerals, the caskets are always covered 6 feets under the ground for the mot to eat them up.
This location feels meaningful and cinematic because it's a place where the caskets are being looked until they are buried in the sand. Everyone comes from far to watch how the object will carry the people inside it and die with them. It's just so sad and I feel this applies to real life because it's a story people are telling. Most people are born to be used in life, but in this case, are they being used for good or for bad? This i don't know.

Description – “Why this object?” |
|---|
I choose three caskets and the reason why I choose these three caskets is because it's usually one casket i do see in most funerals i attend, but this one was a just so emotional and unbelievable that three people — Father, mother and son can be buried in one day. I choose the object because it's not normal and **if you notice, these objects are adorned beautifully, spotless, blameless and with gold, but yet still, they are seen as useless and covered in 6 feets to be eaten by termites.
My quest to know why something would be adorned so beautifully in one moment and then in another moment, it's worthless. I know the object is meant to contain dead bodies. If only they could talk, they would scream. The location fits in because it's a funeral ground
The message I wanted to share is that, no matter how rich you are, when you're dead, the rich man himself is no more. You become worthless no matter what, but there's hope of a resurrection. Some people are just meant to come into the world to be useful and then be useless till they die. We can change the narratives.
In my video, I made this object feel like a character as if he could talk and express his emotions and feelings. He said a lot of emotional things in the video that made me see life as just somewhere that would improve for the better in future and repay the damages caused by people.
Conclusion |
|---|
In the future, these caskets won't be made useful in a moment and then useless in another moment. Instead of bringing them into the world to be rendered useless or destroyed, their garmates would be preserved.
