Honesty: The Habit That Changes Everything

We all know bout glamorous shortcuts like fudging a number of tricks, passing someone an insider tip, or breaking a rule. They promise ease, applause, maybe even a quick win. The problem is, those shortcuts are like instant coffee you love for your convenient moment but ultimately tasteless and disappointing.

Honest effort, on the other hand, is the slow-brewed cup that actually keeps you going. I love my filter coffee over the instant coffee one so I wait and watch before taking a decision and right now I am in that process, seriously.

Let me make it clear why honesty matters starts with a simple truth, trust is the base of human life. Whether you’re hiring a vendor, buying from a shop, or relying on a colleague to deliver, you operate on the assumption that the other person will be fair. When dishonesty shows up, cheating on anything, favoring friends over merit, or cutting corners at work, this engine fails no matter what lubricant you pour in.

Sorry being a mechanical engineer, I couldn't find a better term. I am sure things might move for a while, but eventually the machine jams, and the costs are higher than the quick gains ever were. I am against undue benefits but definitely protest when someone cheats me and gives my share to someone else for a cut.

Rules are prime and should be in place for everyone to follow no matter what.

Think about a neighborhood shop that uses less material but charges the same. For a while customers might not notice, but when word spreads, or when you actually weigh them the shopper loses its most valuable asset, the reputation.

The same holds for people. A reputation for integrity opens doors. It invites opportunities, relationships, and even goodwill when you need it. Short-term gains from deceit rarely pay long-term dividends. See where is the price of our beloved coin going to.

Favoritism is another temptation that makes a big difference. “I’ll help my friend get this role” sounds generous, but when it sidelines fairness, it breeds resentment and lowers morale. Teams thrive when performance and effort matter, not connections alone. You scratch my back, I will yours takes you nowhere so fairness encourages everyone to do their best, and that energy lifts the whole group.

No fairness, no fair team, maybe you gain some but the losses are huge. Cheating and dishonesty finish your internal moral and self-confidence. Each small compromise makes the next one easier. What looks like as a harmless lie can become a pattern that changes how you see yourself.

To be honest, practicing honesty strengthens your sense of self-respect. It’s surprisingly empowering to know you didn’t take the easy way out. So how do we choose to do better? Start small, speak up if a colleague is overlooked. Credit the person who did the work. Make fairness a habit in meetings, hiring, and daily interactions.

Celebrate effort and improvement, not just shortcut to earn easy money. When you do that you enjoy it in the beginning but you sure are closing the main gate from where it comes. Maybe the system tempts us to design tricks that reward transparency instead rather than doing what's already going on.

Finally, remember, honesty doesn’t mean being rigid or joyless. It’s not about moralizing but it’s about making life easy that gives you a nice sleep. Choose honesty, not because it’s always easy, but because it works. Over time, that choice builds a life and a community you can be proud of and that sure is a win worth having.
