The oldest tree on the Island of Montreal is believed to be approximately 360 years old. It's a champion oak (or a northern red oak if you prefer) located in Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles.

This Quercus rubra took root in the middle of the Parc du Bois-de-la-Réparation, which is part of what is known as the Shrine of the Sacred Heart.

The Sanctuaire du Sacré-Coeur de Jésus et de Saint Padre Pio is now the full official name for this Sanctuary of Eucharistic Adoration.

Marie de La Rousselière was the founder of the site. In 1886, her pious Catholic​ family arrived from France, where they fled from the French Republicans' anti-clerical​ feeling of that period.

The Reparation Chapel was built ten years later, in 1896.

For the first two years of existence, it was the Dominicans who took care of the place. Then came the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament who took over until 1900. Finally, from 1921 to this day, it has been the Capuchins who have managed this religious establishment.

The Order of Friars Minor Capuchin is an offshoot of the Franciscans. Here you can see a stained glass representing Francis of Assisi, the founder of the order and the Patron Saint of Ecology.

Prior to the sixties, visitors came in large numbers.

But after Vatican II, pilgrims were far less going for a journey.

Today, 1200 people on average meet there during the weekend.

The faithful will walk​ along fourteen outdoor Stations of the Cross, which are situated in the same area as the tree.

The twelveth one is The Death of Jesus.
