# Film Reviewers Boycott Disney Following Disney Barring LA Times

in #trending7 years ago (edited)

Disney initially boycotted the LA Times over an article detailing the corporation's shady dealings in Anaheim.

In recent days we’ve seen an unfortunate and disgusting attempt to silence the free press by the world’s wealthy millionaires. Truly we’re living in some disgusting times. First there was Joe Ricketts, who closed down the fantastic DNAinfo after his workers tried to unionize, before that Peter Thiel sued Gawker into inexistence because his feeling were very very hurt you see, and now Disney has barred the LA Times from reviewing its movies following an article they wrote about the Disney corporation harassing Anaheim and depriving them of money that you can find here. We’ll be hyperlinking to the article a lot like here or here or maybe here, if you initially missed it.

The discovery of the ban was revealed when the LA Times published that they will not be reviewing Thor: Ragnarok when it came out due to Disney barring them from any press screening. This is obviously censorship, as it attempts to silence critical speech by giving the LA Times access to the kinds of articles that often get easy popular attention (such as a review of a big blockbuster movie) so they stop writing articles like this one about the Disney company gouging the city of Anaheim. In case you missed the link I also posted it right here.
Fortunately, journalists have come out and announced they will not be reviewing Disney movies in solidarity with the LA Times. It started with Alyssa Rosenberg of the Washington Post, then went to the AV Club, then spread to the Boston Globe, until finally the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, The New York Film Critics Circle, the Boston Society of Film of Critics and The National Society of Film Critics put out statements saying they will be barring Disney films from winning their year end critics awards, awards which often help films push through to the attention of the Academy. Oops! Disney you screwed up! And all because of articles such as this.
