The river Congo is also known by the name of the Zaire river. It is a major river of Africa. This river, which covers the distance of 4700 kilo-meters (2922 miles), which makes it the world's ninth longest river. It is the largest river in West-Central Africa and the longest river in Africa after the Nile River. Measured along with the Lualaba, the Congo River has a total length of 4,370 km (2,715 mi). It is the only river to cross the equator twice. The Congo Basin has a total area of about 4,000,000 km (1,500,000 sq mi), or 13% of the entire African landmass. The river falls seven meters wide at its mouth and falls into the sea. It sends 20 million cubic feet of sludge water every second in the sea, which is four times the average of the entire Mississippi river. Its sludge water appears to be distinct from seawater, 100 miles deep and 4,000 feet deep above sea level.
