Samsung ISOCELL Plus: a new sensor technology

in #undefined5 years ago

At this moment, Samsung announced a fresh photographic sensor technology (which could be used on both smartphones and cameras). This is ISOCELL Plus, an evolution of the already well-known ISOCELL used in many products in different variants.

As described by Samsung, FSI (front lighting) or BSI (backlight) can still be the CMOS sensors used on smartphones today. The latter allows you to capture better pictures under the same circumstances compared to the FSI.

The next stage is to avoid the light that is expected to reach a photodiode from accidentally hitting another, causing noise within the picture. At this point in 2013, Samsung arrived with the first ISOCELLs, enabling the latter problem to be reduced. In fact, with a physical barrier, the individual photodiodes are isolated from each other and then focused with a microlens on the photons.

What then does ISOCELL Plus change? The normal ISOCELL sensors have a metal grid to separate the pixels, but they absorb or reflect part of the light that reduces the backlight's benefits. A fresh material that decreases these two issues could be created thanks to Fujifilm.

This technological innovation enables better color fidelity and 15 percent increases light sensitivity. With high-resolution cameras and smartphones in mind, the new ISOCELL Plus makes it possible to use smaller pixels (0.8 μm) without loss of quality. On the one hand, this enables multiple cameras to be integrated into a smartphone and, on the other, it enables higher-resolution sensors.
