First Oil Painting || Sleeping Owl

in #undefined6 years ago (edited)

Hello Lovelies :)

I've been experimenting and playing around with a lot of mediums lately, and I thought after years of painting with watercolours and acrylics, I'd try my hand at some oil painting. As usual, owls are my favourite subject!

I got a little too excited at the art store and bought over RM100+ worth of supplies, gosh! They were some cheaper brand oil paints to start out with, Marie's Oil Colours (18x12ml tubes), Marie's 3 in 1 Oil Painting Medium (which smelled absolutely horrible and toxic), and some flat bristle brushes that I read would hold oil paint better.

Now, keeping in mind I had NEVER used oil paints before, I wasn't sure about things like thinner, solvent or varnish, (I still don't. Man I should really be doing more research.) which was why I bought the 3 in 1 Medium. (Its description says - made with Dammar Resin, Turpentine and Linseed Oil)

These are my painting step-by-step as I worked each layer in. The flexibility of mixing and blending colours with oil paints is amazing, especially being able to control brush strokes like in a digital painting. I opted to paint on a 5"x8" piece of mounting board that I cut out from a bigger piece I had laying around, as I wasn't sure how to prime a canvas for oil paint yet. (If anyone has any tips, I would love to hear them!)

Working in details was hard without making them look flat, which was why I ended up using softer strokes on the feather details.

And here is a way-too-close-up of me holding up my painting:

This painting is referenced, and took about 6 hours or so to finish. My entire living room smelled so toxic by the time I was done, eventhough I kept the room well ventilated. I will probably be looking for a better/safer thinner soon.

I hope you enjoyed my process, I look forward to making more oil paint artworks :)

You have a great admiration for owls indeed, i remember your previous artwork also. It is very lovely and for a first oil painting artwork i think it is successful. Sadly oil paintings are messy and toxic and smell very bad and they need varnish.. Be careful with them although is good that you are experimenting and expanding your knowledge. Looking forward for more art:)

Thank you! I'm very happy with the turn out as well :D The smell was definitely not something I was expecting, with zero oil painting experience. And the cleaning-up! Gosh!

I have a scarred lung from post-surgery, and inhalation exposure to turpentine and varnish will definitely be dangerous for me. I will have to postpone oil painting until I find a better alternative to the thinner xD or hopefully another good solution.

Thank you for your support! Always love reading your comments x)

Oh, this is serious, you should stay away from them. You have such a big variety of artworks at your Instagram I am looking forward for more 😊

Hi @melissamyra thank you for presenting your Oil painting of Owl, your painting immediately attracted my attention, lovely owl and such calm colors. It is one of the medium that requires a lot patience as sometimes you need to give a little break between layers to dry, but at the end you can create multiple layers that is the difference from other mediums. Love your process steps and thank you for your reference picture.

Great oil painting. I like the color detail that you paint the white chest of owl. The colors you painted look mature and wonderful.

Thank you! They are beautiful and magical indeed :) It's a shame that there aren't that many in the wild where I live.

Thanks for the support and comment :) <3

Is there any particular reason why you like owls? I like that they are wise, thoughtful and seem to be always calm :)

Your painting is very nice. Shadowing is spot on! It really looks good!

Thank you for sharing and have a great Sunday!

Thank you! :) I think the first time I first fell in love with them was when I first read the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series when I was I think 13, and have just always been fascinated with them since.

I find them so delicately gracious and vicious at the same time, that and their association with wisdom and intelligence :) I also watched some documentaries on owls that absolutely drew me in. (The latter video is hilarious)

How cute:) The line of the face is also cute:) Hard and thick brushstroke make this more charming. Background is also so similiar to the owl's line. It also so good to watch. So gorgeous painting ~~

Thank you! I agree, thick strokes seem to make oil painting forms look more interesting, beats looking too realistic too often. Helps me relax a little on the details :)

Wow, very lovely art! <3 and the subject is adorable too haha what a cutiie owl XD

Exactly why I thought I had to paint it! xD Thank youu :3

Los dibujos de aves son unos de mis favoritos, tengo en mi blog una serie de aves titulada "Aves de Venezuela" y la Lechuza y el buho aun no las he dibujado, esta quedó mu buena... felicitaciones y saludos desde Venezuela.

Had this google-translated xD Hopefully it was accurate. Thank you!
