The 50 states in alphabetical order are as follows: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Additionally, there is the District of Columbia as well as U.S. territories and associated states: American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Midway Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Territories and associated states control their own internal affairs but possess special diplomatic and economic ties with the American federal government.

The 13 original colonies were Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Virginia.

Delaware is the oldest state in the union, having joined on Dec. 17, 1787, followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut. The most recent states added to the union have been Alaska and Hawaii, which were both admitted in 1959.

Simple post, but honestly… kind of satisfying to read. There’s something oddly calming about seeing all the states lined up alphabetically like that — Alabama, Alaska, Arizona… it just flows. I remember trying to memorize them years ago, not very successfully though. Somewhere around Missouri my brain would just… give up.
And when you look at the list slowly you start noticing things. How some names feel heavy and old — Massachusetts, Pennsylvania — while others sound almost wide and open, like Montana or Wyoming. Hard to explain exactly. Just a feeling. Fifty states, one country, but each name carries a completely different landscape behind it. Forests, deserts, coastlines, huge cities. Snow somewhere… sunshine somewhere else.
Anyway. Simple list. But strangely enjoyable to scroll through. Makes you realize how big the country actually is.
