Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989, was killed in a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran. President Donald Trump announced his death Saturday, and Iranian state television confirmed it hours later. Iran’s government declared 40 days of mourning. Khamenei was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his Tehran compound, according to four Israeli security officials. Trump, who earlier said the operation was aimed at toppling the Iranian government, said in a Truth Social post that the attack would continue “uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!” Trump launched the attack after a weeks-long lobbying effort by Israel and Saudi Arabia, according to four people familiar with the matter.

U.S. military forces hit Iranian missile sites, its air defense systems, and command and control centers for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. Western airstrikes on Saturday targeted top commanders at Iran’s main intelligence agency, a senior Western security official told The Washington Post. The U.S. in recent weeks amassed an immense strike force in the region, while pressing Iran to dismantle its nuclear program in negotiations that failed to reach a resolution
