Halloween; Can Vegan's give out Non Vegan Candy?
There was a bit of drama following a facebook post by famous hockey player Georges Laraque on Halloween. George Laraque is a big name in the vegan community of Canada. He is the narrator for the french version of Earthlings "Terriens", an active voice for the animal liberation movement, and he even owns a vegan restaurant in Montreal called Delicieux Veg Fusion Cafe.
This Halloween he posted an image of himself with many boxes of dairy filled chocolates that he was giving to trick-or-treater's who passed by his door.
Georges is the narrator of "Terriens" (french "Earthlings") a film that takes an in depth look at how animals are used in 5 different industires. You can watch it here:
(and here is the English version bellow narrated by Joaquin Phoenix:)
A lot of people saw his post as nothing but a kind gesture, giving full sized chocolate bars for Halloween is often seen as a jackpot for kids passing by. Which is probably as far as he thought about it himself. But when the chocolate contains dairy and it's being given out by a famous vegan there is bound to be confusion and debate that follows.
At first when other vegans saw this there were questions of why he didn't choose to buy vegan candies to give out. As there are many candies including "skittles" "maynards" "and even some specialty vegan milk chocolates available that do not contain the breast milk of mother cows. Georges made jokes about it at first, saying that he will give out broccoli next year.
What's so scary about dairy? I've written a previous article on the dairy industry that you NEED to see to truly understand why this is probably the cruelest of ALL animal exploitation industries. Check it out bellow.

Luckily there are plenty of cruelty free vegan options for trick-or-treat in the Halloween season, and with Christmas and Valentines coming up why not go for these options instead?
After 4 days of rampant comments on George's original post he ended up saying that if he had the chance to go back he would have made a different decision in what to purchase. I think it's really big of him to consider this, when clearly his intentions were good and he just wanted to make kids happy.
Next year I'm sure he will still be giving out kick-ass candies that even the vegan kids can enjoy :P
On a side note, if you are in the Montreal region or planning a trip to Montreal be sure to check out George's restaurant Delicieux Veg Fusion Cafe. It's an amazing vegan restaurant featuring tons of awesome in house sorbets, with crazy flavors like "cherry tomato" and "sweet potato" along with classic flavors like "chocolate" and "pistachio".
