Hello Teaching Team

Hello My Steemain Friends ,

Today I am writing about an interesting Steemit Engagement Challenge S30- W5: which is all time my favourite topic ""A multi-purpose quilt || The 3R-S30W6."" this amazing challenge organised by @lunasilver

Describe a step-by-step process for carrying out your recycling project. Include the origin of your fabric scraps. Where did they come from?

Today, for this competition, I needed various types of fabric scraps.

  • First, I opened the storage compartment under my bed, where I keep my children's old clothes that they have outgrown. When I saw this competition, the first thing that came to my mind was my children's shirts—specifically the cotton ones. I was glad that we don't simply throw away our young children's clothes; instead, we save them.

  • Therefore, there could be no better way to recycle them than to transform those small garments into a finished bedsheet. So, I began by taking out my children's shirts, along with an old pink kurta of my own that was no longer in use.

*Next, I ironed the fabrics to make it easier to cut them into pieces.

  • I then cut the fabric into square and rectangular shapes. I wanted to avoid any wastage whatsoever; the real joy lies in being able to utilize every single scrap of fabric.

*Once I had cut all the pieces, 10×7 , 5×7.
I happily began joining them together using my sewing machine.

  • I stitched the pieces together—both lengthwise and widthwise—until the dimensions of the resulting sheet matched the exact length and width I desired. I then stitched along all four edges to finish it off.

  • Once the bedsheet had reached the required length and width, I ironed it again to set the seams and ensure it lay perfectly flat and smooth.

  • When I showed the finished bedsheet to my son, he liked it so much that he declared, "I'm going to do my studying right here!" Since it is currently the summer season, this cotton sheet will also help absorb any perspiration.

  • I then spread out the bedsheet and snapped a few photos. After writing down my username and the current date, I took the final shots; shortly thereafter, my son placed his notebook on the sheet and began to study.

How long have you known and applied the 3Rs in your daily life?

Throughout our lives—right from childhood—we have practiced the "3 Rs" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). We never allow an item to go to waste as long as there is still a possibility of reusing it. The principles of recycling are taught to us both at school and at home. Although the terminology used may vary, children are consistently taught the practical application of these concepts—whether it involves something as simple as a child's pencil or something else entirely. We continue to use a pencil for as long as it remains usable.

In the past, many people would simply attach a pen cap to a pencil to extend its life, but children these days rarely do that. We can create a variety of things from leftover fabric—for instance, we can make doormats; in fact, I have made doormats myself. We make kurtas out of old sarees; when my niece was little, I even crafted a lehenga for her using a chunni (scarf)—it turned out to be absolutely lovely. There is no doubt that when we create something by recycling materials—especially if the result is truly beautiful and functional—it brings a sense of inner peace and the satisfaction that nothing has gone to waste.

Besides fabrics, do you recycle other materials? Which ones?

Absolutely. Beyond just fabric, we also repurpose large plastic containers for planting trees, and make use of old children's books, among other things. I haven't given away any of my children's books yet.

This is because when the kids need to work on school projects, the pictures inside those books come in handy; this saves us from having to buy separate charts or illustrations, thereby saving me money. When my children observe this practice, they, too, develop the habit of not needing to discard things prematurely.

We can carefully preserve these items and utilize them again in the future—which is particularly useful since, when children are young, they frequently require various pictures or illustrations for their daily activities.

Let me tell you a story: my son once bought a balloon—a very large one—but it was made of paper-like material and featured a lion print. Once the air leaked out, it became useless; however, instead of throwing it away, I carefully put it aside and preserved it. Later, when there was a fancy dress competition at my child's school, I carefully unfolded and cut up that lion-print balloon to create an "tribal" costume.

That costume received so much praise! I crafted the jewelry for the tribal outfit using silver paper, and since I happened to have some artificial leaves on hand, I attached those to the costume as well. It was widely admired, and my child ended up winning the first prize in the fancy dress competition!

To be honest, I felt a deep sense of personal joy and satisfaction knowing that I had brought this creative idea to life.
