I am choosing the third painting: Fra Åsgårdstrand (1887)

About twenty years ago, Daniel used to earn a living by taking his boat out to sea to catch fish for his family; in his spare time, he would take the local residents on boat rides for leisure.

Daniel was a man of indomitable courage, always ready to face any situation that came his way. However, as the saying goes, neither human courage nor will stands a chance against the will of God.

One day, as dusk was falling, Daniel set out for a boat ride with his two young children, his wife, and a few neighbors. Suddenly, the sky turned pitch black. At first, gentle breezes blew, but they soon escalated into a ferocious storm. Daniel’s boat began to be tossed about by the ocean waves, and he found himself a considerable distance from the shore.

Summoning all his courage, he began to row the boat furiously toward the shore. People standing on the beach began to scream in alarm; Daniel could not hear their voices, for he was pouring every ounce of his strength and concentration into somehow reaching the safety of the land.

And then—battered by the gale-force winds and the surging waves—the boat capsized. Everyone on board perished; two days later, only Daniel’s unconscious body and the boat washed ashore.

Even today, many years later, Daniel shudders at the mere memory of that incident. In that tragedy, he lost his entire family as well as several neighbors—a grief he is destined to carry with him for the rest of his life. To keep those memories alive in his heart, whenever the opportunity arises, he goes to sit beside his boat and gazes out at the ocean with vacant, desolate eyes.

Since that fateful day, he has never once launched his boat into the sea again. His life has become utterly devoid of vitality; he now lives merely as a walking corpse. The anguish of that tragedy has not allowed him to truly live a single day since.
