Glory Hole, Whitingham Dam, VT

My husband decided he wanted to explore this area around the dam. He was intrigued by this area because the author Archer Mayor had written about it in the book The Fruits of the Poisonous Tree.

This glory hole featured prominently in the story, and is on the cover of one of the editions.

There’s a chain link fence all around this area, so I had to shoot these photos from between the links. The glory hole is the overflow when the water is high. The water was surprisingly low, considering how much rain we’ve had farther south. I guess we thought it was much the same just a little north of us.

This little building also figures prominently in the story.

The dam creates the Harriman reservoir for drinking water.

When we’d finished taking these photos, we went down the road looking for a parking area to eat lunch.

We found this lovely, serene, and empty, area. So we claimed a table and laid out the feast. As we looked around it seemed like there were small people openings in the gates in the fence.

So when we’d finished and cleaned up, we went exploring. Sure enough, there was an open gate, an obviously well traveled path going through, and a sign saying no trespassing. So we trespassed.

Once inside my husband noticed the pole full of cameras, while I was busy looking at wild flowers. I have no idea what these are, they look like a legume or vetch.

We climbed to the top and the wind promptly blew my husband’s new hat off, towards the fence on the dam. That was the first time he nearly lost it. It was a cool view down the Reservoir, but pretty windy.

We figured we’d trespassed enough so we headed back down and went on our way.
