The Sand Cave Trail is a short, 0.1 to 0.3-mile out-and-back boardwalk path located at the main Cave City entrance of Mammoth Cave National Park. Rated as easy and fully accessible, it takes about 5 to 15 minutes to walk and leads directly to a viewing platform overlooking the entrance of Sand Cave.

Historic Significance
The trail is most famous for its dark history rather than its physical length. Sand Cave was the location of a massive 1925 international media sensation involving famed cave explorer Floyd Collins.

The Incident : On January 30, 1925, Collins was exploring the narrow passages of Sand Cave alone, hoping to find a new entrance to attract tourists near the main highway. On his way out, he kicked a 26.5-pound rock loose, which pinned his leg in a tight crawlspace 60 feet underground.

The Rescue Attempt : The rescue operation lasted 18 days and became one of the first major transatlantic radio and news events. Over ten thousand spectators, vendors, and journalists flooded the rural area, prompting the Kentucky National Guard to step in for crowd control.

The Outcome : A partial cave collapse cut off physical access to Collins. Rescuers drilled a vertical shaft to reach him, but he tragically passed away from exposure and starvation just days before they reached him on February 16.
