Getting Ready for Easter in Vienna: A Perfect Day at Schönbrunn
When people think about visiting Vienna during Easter, many imagine cozy cafés, chocolate eggs, and classical music playing somewhere in the background. But one of the coolest Easter experiences in the city is actually not located in the historic city center at all.
Instead, you need to head a little bit outside the inner districts to the famous Schönbrunn Palace area, where the wonderful Easter Market takes place every spring.
If you want to learn more about the palace itself, you can read about it here:

Prepare Your Walking Shoes
Let’s be honest about something: a visit to Schönbrunn is secretly a fitness program.
You might arrive thinking you will casually browse a few Easter stalls… but before you know it, your fitness watch proudly announces that you have walked 15,000 steps. And you will barely notice.
Why?
Because there is simply so much to explore.
Step 1: The Easter Market
The Easter Market in front of the palace is the perfect starting point. Dozens of beautifully decorated stalls sell:
- Painted Easter eggs
- Handmade crafts
- Austrian snacks and sweets
- Spring decorations
There are also activities for children and plenty of food stands. And yes… you will probably buy something you didn’t plan to buy. That’s part of the experience.
Step 2: The Palace Itself
Right behind the market stands the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace.
Inside, you can walk through many of the historic rooms once used by the Habsburg imperial family. The palace is huge, the decorations are impressive, and suddenly you realize that emperors apparently did not believe in small apartments.
Exploring the palace alone easily adds a few thousand steps to your daily count.
Step 3: The Giant Gardens
After leaving the palace, you enter the massive gardens of Schönbrunn.
Here you will find:
- Elegant fountains
- Sculptures
- Tree-lined walking paths
- The famous Gloriette hill viewpoint
The gardens are so large that you might start wondering if you accidentally left Vienna and entered a national park.
Step 4: The Zoo
Still not tired?
Good news: the Schönbrunn Zoo is located right inside the palace grounds. It is actually one of the oldest zoos in the world, and it is home to animals ranging from giant pandas to elephants.
By the time you leave the zoo, your step counter will probably look something like this:
15,000 steps. Possibly 18,000.
But honestly, it won’t feel like exercise at all. It will just feel like a fantastic spring day in one of Vienna’s most beautiful places.
