If using Gmail's SMTP, I suggest you test the email with:
python sendnotice.py
If you get an SMTPAuthenticationError, go to https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha to allow the device then retry.
Good tip, thanks! The reason I suggested using an "application specific password for gmail" is to get around this.
I rarely use Gmail anymore (got tired of their privacy violations), so I stumbled on that error and spent an hour trying to figure it out.
