I think that unrolling SBD right now (conversion) would be more useful than @timcliff's suggestion. I actually suggested the idea of user initated creation of SBD contracts quite a long time ago when I was campaigning to have it removed.

I don't think that removing SBD is necessary (IE, ceasing to issue it, possibly automatically converting all remaining). I think it may well serve as a brake on steem prices in a positive way, allowing it to weather selloffs that see other coins plummet in price, more easily.
