Plans for the future.

Planning is a crucial part of any business, whether it involves industrial manufacturing or something less imposing.

It is standard practice for companies to have a planning department staffed by intelligent people trained in the discipline—experts whose verdicts guide the company’s leadership.

But you know, this is precisely where two forms of wisdom collide head-on: the wisdom of our forebears and the wisdom of university spreadsheets based primarily on statistical data.

Ask a shepherd in the spring how many sheep he has.

I suspect that—even if he holds three degrees in other fields—he would tell you that the best place to count sheep is in your own bed; tallying them up in your head helps you drift off to sleep. Counting sheep out in the pasture, however, is simply pointless—a waste of time—because circumstances can change so rapidly that the final figure would become meaningless.

Have you ever seen a fisherman bragging about his catch while he is still out fishing? No, that simply doesn't happen. It is only later—much later, perhaps amidst a boisterous group of friends—that a fisherman might boast about the fish he caught in the past, and perhaps exaggerate the numbers a little.

And no fisherman can plan exactly how much bait he’ll need or predict which fish will be biting that day.

Only God knows what the next minute holds; there’s no point wasting the current minute making plans. You’re better off just doing something useful—lol.
