The stereotype of a fisherman's patience.

When it comes to the concept of patience, which is so valuable if we use it correctly, people often think of fishermen patiently waiting for a fish to swallow their hook and bait.

This is partly true, but only partially, because a fisherman's patience is not like the patience of someone locked in a cave, brooding. A fisherman searches for fish, tries different baits, chooses the right spot to cast his line, monitors the weather and his float—his patience is very active.

Rather, nominal patience is more like the efforts of a dog trainer who slowly but steadily works towards getting his dog to recognize and obey certain commands.

You can't reason with a fish, and patience plays a secondary role here. You can only please a fish, like a chef pleases his client in a restaurant. But you know that sometimes chefs can be irritable and it's hard to call them patient people if they receive any kind of remark.

I tend to believe those who think that fishing is an active pastime, that moment when you forget about patience, it ceases to exist in the form we're accustomed to perceiving it, like when standing in line at the dentist :)
