Wonders of Technology!

in WORLD OF XPILAR2 hours ago

I got a new mobile phone last week.

I was way overdue for an upgrade, since the previous phone I had been using — which had a number of failing and broken features on it — was getting on for 6 or 7 years old.

6-7 years might as well be a century in the world of technology!

I'm still learning how to use everything, which is actually a process that also involves discovering the myriad things on this device that I likely will never be using for anything.

Looking at this device and exploring its features tells me just how far technology has come, and the way in which I must be getting really old because so many of these things — even though I understand how to use them — seem utterly irrelevant to me.

The thing that never ceases to amaze me is that this little palm sized device is more powerful, and has more memory than my first home computer... perhaps by a factor of 100.

There was no such thing as "wireless internet" when I started this gig, and mobile phones were these huge heavy bricks you carried around that not only cost a vast amount of money to purchase, but also cost of vast amount of money to have service on.

Not to mention the fact that it was unlikely that you would have service unless you lived in a fairly large city. And even then, dropped calls were common.

But I remember being so very excited about my first computer, and thought it was amazing that it had a 20 MB hard drive! All these years later, it would be virtually impossible to run any modern applications on it. But back then it cost me more than $3,000!

In spite of definitely being a mobile phone user, I have never reached the point where I treat my phone as almost an extra limb that I can never have more than a few inches from my person. In fact, I often have to go retrieve it from another room in the house, or even the car... when I forget it there.

I guess that is the difference between somebody who learned about technology in midlife versus somebody who is a technological "native" who has never known a world without smartphones and wi-fi.

I still don't use my phone much for doing things online, and I definitely don't use it for things like creating Steemit posts... because I can't stand trying to type on such a tiny screen. But I do like the voice-to-text feature for taking notes for later use.

Regardless, I am grateful to have a new phone... and I am slowly learning my way around its features.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week ahead!
