UEFA Champions League

The round of 16 started today, and these were the scores:

Galtasaray 1-0 Liverpool
Atalanta 1-6 Bayern
Atletico Madrid 5-2 Tottenham
Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona

A bad day for the English teams, and a great day for Bayern, who is basically through to the next round. Atletico got a huge lead against Tottenham who have to win at least by a three goal difference and I don't see that Atletico can lose by that much. Newcastle had terrible luck, played a great game, scored a goal and then gave away a penalty in compensation time. I must say the referee gave 4 minutes but let the game continue and the penalty was made. Tough luck.

Now I come to the game which interested me and which left me completely disappointed. Liverpool had three great chances in the first five minutes, missed them all, conceded a goal on the seventh minute and from then on looked like a third division team. I really have no idea what football Slot is striving for, but whatever it is, it is nowhere near what I think football should be. I really am sick, and this is not only Liverpool, of this trying to come out playing with horizontal passes inside their own area. I mean back in my day if you played the ball back to your goal keeper you were automatically booed. and there is no sense in it, all it does is put pressure on the goalkeeper and lose time. I think today Van Dijk lost five minutes just holding the ball in front of the goalkeeper and seeming to have no idea of whom to give the ball to.

And I am a Liverpool fan, but Galatasaray's disallowed second goal was a good goal, I fail to see any offside there. On the other hand Liverpool's disallowed goal was a clear arm ball by Konate who had an awful game. There is basically no midfield, I mean you are losing and you send in Robertson to save the game, you really are out of any reasonable excuses, Slot is just not working out.

Does this mean Liverpool are out? Absolutely not, at Anfield things should be different, but any confidence I had in Slot is completely gone.
