The Screen Addict |
I took care of a blind spot in my appreciation of Walter Hillโs filmography the other day.
Iโve always been a big fan of Hillโs work as a writer, producer and director โ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟโ๐ ๐ ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ฑ), ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ด), ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ฎ), the Alien films, to name just a few โ but for some reason I had skipped over : .
Hill deserves more praise for his contributions to the Western โ the one film genre that is truly, typically American. We tend to mostly focus on big names like Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone and John Ford when discussing Westerns, but Iโd argue that Hill is a key figure as well.
The multi-hyphenate made a couple of ๐ข๐ค๐ต๐ถ๐ข๐ญ Westerns, like ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ด ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ฌ), ๐ช๐ถ๐น๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐น๐น (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ฑ) and ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฎ ๐๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฎ), directed episodes of Western-themed TV shows and series like ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ and ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐น (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฒ), and his other work often has a โWestern-feelโ to it as well.
Films like ๐ฆ๐ผ๐๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ญ) and ๐๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฆ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ฒ) for example, might not be Westerns in the purest form, but one could be forgiven for classifying โem as such.
๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐บ๐ผ however, very much is a traditional Western. And one with a phenomenal cast to boot.
Itโs always a delight to see Gene Hackman in any genre, but somehow the Western just fits the legendary actor like a cowhide glove. Joining Hackman are the equally legendary Robert Duvall, the always dependable Jason Patric, and a very fresh-faced Matt Damon.
The true highlight of this film however, is Wes Studi, who plays the titular hero. Studi has been one of my favorite actors ever since I saw him in ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ช๐ผ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ฌ). Such a great face and commanding presence.
Studi is obviously often typecast in Westerns, so Iโm always happy to see him in other genres that allow him to showcase his range as an actor, like Michael Mannโs ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ฑ). The two had of course made ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ ๐ผ๐ต๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ฎ) together a couple of years prior.
๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐บ๐ผ is very much Studiโs film, though. And I canโt think of any other actor who would have been a better fit.
The screenplay for Geronimo was written by another hero of mine โ John Milius. Iโve always felt that Milius doesnโt get enough recognition for the amazing stuff he wrote and unforgettable characters he created. Just incredible.
I also love the fact that the Coen brothers โ who are close with Milius โ based the character of Walter in ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐ด ๐๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐๐ธ๐ถ (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ด) on their friend.
As always, Iโm veering wildly off topic. But thatโs what happens when youโre passionate about something.
๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐บ๐ผ is an exceptionally well-made film that should have been up there with the likes of ๐ช๐ผ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ and ๐ ๐ผ๐ต๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป๐.
The same goes for Hill, by the way. When I think of great filmmakers who shaped my cinematic consciousness during The Eighties and early Nineties, Hill is certainly on that list.
And he should be on yours, too.
