Who is Nicușor Dan?

His full name is Nicușor Daniel Dan, born on December 20, 1969, in Făgăraș, Brașov County, Romania.
He graduated from the University of Bucharest, then continued his higher studies in France, where he obtained a Master’s and PhD in Mathematics from prestigious institutions such as École Normale Supérieure and Paris 13 University.
He began his professional life as an academic researcher in mathematics before moving into civic activism and politics.

🔹 His Early Public Work

Before entering politics, Dan was a prominent civil activist in Bucharest and co-founded associations dedicated to protecting architectural heritage and the urban environment.
He led campaigns against corruption in the construction sector and gained recognition for his firm stance against what he called the “real estate mafia” in the capital.

🔹 His Path to Politics

In 2016, he entered the Romanian Parliament as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies representing Bucharest.
In 2020, he was elected Mayor of Bucharest, focusing on infrastructure projects and administrative integrity.
Then, on May 26, 2025, he was elected President of Romania, becoming the first president from a civil society and independent background since the revolution.

🔹 His Political Vision and Ideas

Nicușor Dan is considered part of the pro-European political current and focused his presidential campaign on strengthening Romania’s ties with the European Union and NATO.
In one of his first speeches after taking office, he said:

“The Romanian state needs fundamental change… it must be a partner to society, not an adversary.”
Among his main priorities are: administrative reform, anti-corruption efforts, infrastructure development, and upholding the rule of law.

🔹 The Challenges He Faces

Dan assumed the presidency at a sensitive time, following a severe political crisis that hit Romania in 2024, and he is expected to restore trust in public institutions.
His greatest challenge is transforming his image as a civic activist into that of an effective national leader, while maintaining a balance between integrity and practical governance.
Many see him as a symbol of political renewal, while his opponents consider him an amateur in a field full of veterans.
