Better Life: Future and Present
Ram Dass famously observed:
"Be here now!"
While many of us may be familiar with that quote, what does it really mean? What are the deeper implications?
In its original context, this quote undoubtedly was a reflection of the fact that many people wander through life like zombies, simply doing "what they're supposed to" on a daily basis without really thinking about it, while staying largely "checked out" in their minds without actually being present in whatever activity they're undertaking in that moment.
Whether we're working on a spreadsheet, or going through our routine at the gym, or eating our dinner, chances are our minds are often somewhere else, caught in processing the day or dreaming about the future.
So, if you're thinking about the future, you're clearly not thinking about the present!
Does that mean we shouldn't plan for the future at all, and not map out some sort of goal that we should move towards?
It is definitely wise to have at least some plans for the future, but saying so comes with a few reservations.
The way I see it, the biggest issue at hand is not one of discussing now versus later, but considering the simple fact that we really don't know who we're going to be in the future.
It might be very noble and responsible to make plans and work towards some goal that you want to undertake 10 or 20 years from now, but if you're anything like most people walking around on this planet you're going to change considerably between now and 20 years from now!

And so, you may arrive 20 years from now with all those plans completed and realize that what you been working for for 20 years is actually relatively meaningless to you in your current state of being.
If that sounds a bit far-fetched, consider the substantial number of people who are waiting to do some specific thing until they retire. But once they retire they discover that "that thing" they've been waiting for actually isn't that big a deal and they end up doing something completely different.
Does that mean all their planning for the future was a waste of time? Probably not, but it pays to at least have some minimal awareness of the fact that plans change and you as a person may not be the same in the future as you are right now when whatever you're getting involved with sounds like the greatest idea ever!
Thanks for visiting, and Bright Blessings to all!
