Better Living: Life is so Much More Than building Wealth!
No matter where you turn, you are likely bombarded with sales pitches, selling you various ways to become rich or build success or even just keep up the appearance of wealth.
Since many of us live in so-called "consumer societies," it can be easy — and even alluring — to get caught up on the hamster wheels of grind culture, particularly if we have been brainwashed into believing that the measure of us as people is made by how much we have, rather than by who we are.
I have nothing against money... and I frequently have to remind people that it is not money that is the proverbial "root of all evil," it is the love of money.
The biggest problem with the pervasive pursuit of material wealth is that it tends to keep us too constantly busy to enjoy and appreciate some of the simpler things in life that cost nothing at all... and which people enjoy equally whether they are uber-rich or close to poverty.
Consider the value of spending time in deep and meaningful conversation with a friend. It's something that can't be bought, and we typically come away feeling more connected... something that is often lacking when all our time goes into the relentless pursuit of the material.
The other day, I sat in our living room and read... not from a screen, but from an actual paper book, while one of the cats purred and napped in my lap. Again, a totally free activity, as well as a very relaxing and healing one.
My counseling clients are often dealing with stress in their lives, and that stress is often work related... and perhaps related to prioritizing "making money" a little bit too highly. When I ask when they last just did... nothing they typically don't remember.
Personally, I have long found gardening to be one of the most healing activities in my life. Few things are better at "breaking state" than getting your hands into the actual soil of Mother Earth!
Again, it is usually a free activity... unless you're trying to create a swank championship garden.
As we go forth into this new year, let us remember to pause and appreciate the many things that have nothing to do with the pursuit of money!
