If you're new to online poker, you may quickly notice that poker players have their own little language in the chat.

Someone writes NH after a hand.

Another player says GG before leaving the table.

And before a tournament starts, you might see GL or GL ALL.

What does it all mean?

Don't worry — poker players are just trying to save themselves a few keystrokes. 😃

Here are some of the most common abbreviations you may see while playing online poker.

🃏 NH – Nice Hand

Probably one of the most common expressions in poker chat.

NH = Nice Hand

Used to compliment another player after a good or winning hand.

Player 1: NH
Player 2: TY

And that brings us to the next one...

👍 TY / THX – Thank You / Thanks

If someone says NH to you, a simple response could be:

TY = Thank You
THX = Thanks

Simple poker table manners. 😃

🏆 GG – Good Game

GG = Good Game

Often used when a game or tournament is over, or when a player is leaving the table.

If someone knocks you out of a tournament, you might simply write:

GG

...even if you're not particularly happy about it. 😄

🍀 GL – Good Luck

GL = Good Luck

You'll often see this before a tournament or game begins.

You may also see:

GL ALL = Good Luck All

A friendly way of wishing everyone at the table good luck.

🤝 GG WP – Good Game, Well Played

WP = Well Played

Combine it with GG and you get:

GG WP = Good Game, Well Played

A nice way to show respect to another player after a good game.

😲 WOW

This one probably doesn't need much explanation.

Someone hits the only card they needed on the river?

WOW!

Poker has a habit of producing those moments. 😃

😞 UL – Unlucky

UL = Unlucky

Used when another player loses a hand through bad luck.

For example, they were a huge favorite until the river...

UL

Sometimes that's all there is to say.

🤯 OMG – Oh My God

Not exclusive to poker, of course.

But after an unbelievable river card or a huge pot...

OMG can suddenly become very useful. 😄

👋 BRB – Be Right Back

Need to leave the table for a moment?

BRB = Be Right Back

Just remember that the game may continue while you're away.

♠️ A Little Courtesy Goes a Long Way

Poker is competitive, but that doesn't mean the chat has to be unfriendly.

A simple NH, GG, WP or GL can make the table more enjoyable for everyone.

And remember: there is another abbreviation worth knowing:

TYVM = Thank You Very Much

So if someone writes:

NH!

You can answer:

TYVM! 😃
