Lately, it really has felt like every piece of good fortune has been accompanied by a corresponding kick in the nuts. It gets to the point where someone pays you a nice compliment and you start looking around for falling pianos.

I guess that's where the expression "waiting for the other shoe to drop" comes from. But I don't think it's a healthy pattern of thinking. I think we need to delete this subroutine.
