The Zakzal area, located in the heart of the Beni Iznasen Mountains in the Berkane Province, embraces unique natural and historical treasures, making it an exceptional tourist destination. However, this natural gem, whose roots date back thousands of years, today suffers from the impact of consecutive years of drought, which have negatively affected its water springs and dried up its fountains, threatening its ecological balance and affecting its touristic appeal.
Munir Al-Hamdawi, a tour guide at Zakzal Cave, pointed out that the cave remains a witness to the profound human history in the region. In a statement to Le360, he explained that it has been classified as a national heritage site since 1953, and those in charge aspire to include it on the World Heritage list. He clarified that the cave contains wall engravings dating back 13,000 years, which testify to the passage of ancient humans through this land, leaving their civilizational marks.

Al-Hamdawi added that, alongside Zakzal Cave, Al-Hammam Cave stands out as another archaeological treasure, as it witnessed the first human cranial surgery in history 11,000 years ago.
