The Chinese police utilize facial recognition technology on a surveillance camera system (CCTV) to identify and arrest a fraud suspect. The man was arrested while he was watching a concert with another 60,000 spectators.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Ao, was watching Jacky Cheung's concert in Nanchang City over the weekend when he was caught by police.

Police said the 31-year-old man, wanted by police for crimes in the economy, was surprised when approached by the police.

China is known to have a very large and extensive network of CCTV cameras. The country is overseeing its own citizens with 170 million CCTV camera units connected to each other.

Ao himself was first caught on camera CCTV when queuing up buying tickets. He was arrested by the police while sitting enjoying the concert with other audiences.

"The suspect was very surprised when we arrested him," said Li Jin, the police officer who authorized the operation to Xinhua news agency.

He did not think the police could catch him in the midst of tens of thousands of people.

According to Li some CCTV cameras around the ticket sales booth in concert was indeed equipped with scanner technology and face recognition.

China is building the world's largest network of surveillance cameras. About 170 million CCTVs are already installed in the country and planned in the next three years, 400 million more CCTV units will be installed.

Most of the cameras are mastered by artificial intelligence technology, including facial recognition technology that can easily identify criminal faces and automatically alert police.
