Thanksgiving prayer: He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—length of days, for ever and ever. Psalm 21:4

in #prayerlast month

The Psalm 21 is a prayer of thanksgiving for the blessings granted by God to the King. Most likely this Psalm refers to King Hezekiah who defeated the tyrant Sennacherib during the siege of the city of Jerusalem and who, by a serious illness, God gave the King health and more years of life. Hezekiah for his actions was, along with David, Solomon, and Josiah, one of the most glorious kings in the history of the kings of Judah and Israel.
The Psalm teaches that rulers, in order to be blessed in their objectives and projects, must first of all to live according to the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion), because it is through this disposition of the human heart that God hears prayers and grants his blessings and spiritual gifts. This is why one of the prescriptions of the Book of Deuteronomy about the duties of the king is very precise: "He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the LORD his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees" Deuteronomy 17:19.
And it is with these words, which express a total trust in God on the part of the ruler, that the Psalm begins:
"The king rejoices in your strength, LORD.
How great is his joy in the victories you give!
You have granted him his heart's desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips" Psalm 21:1-2.
And the Psalm continues to teach how health and in particular the long life, that is, the longevity or immortality, are spiritual gifts that the Lord grants:
"He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
length of days, for ever and ever" Psalm 21:4.
Because love concludes the Psalm is a bond of union, and whoever enjoys divine love sees their life prosper:
"For the king trusts in the LORD;
through the unfailing love of the Most High
he will not be shaken" Psalm 21:7.
