Cross-posting

in #steem7 years ago

I'm not a big fan of cross posting as in reality I haven't used any of the other social media platforms much in the past - all except Reddit.

I noticed they've added some new functions lately such as just posting on your account and having people follow you as a person too instead of just communities. Sounds a bit backwards than how Steemit are doing it but at the same time it sounds like Reddit trying hard remaining on top in a fast changing market while there are platforms out there trying to take it's place. Not just that but there are some underdogs out there too who will not be relying as much on advertisement than the current centralized platforms doing everything they can to get out as much from advertisement as possible to please their shareholders. I remember when I heard of the new Reddit CEO and I suspected that Reddit was becoming a place of just making as much as possible out of their users than the free place I expected it to become in the beginning. I loved Reddit, I told all my friends to use it but not many did, they created their account but didn't get started properly cause they never spent the time on customizing their accounts to look for and follow their favorite subreddits. If they had they would've quickly gotten the swing out of it and appreciated how well it worked compared to most other giants out there at the time. As Reddit started becoming famous through the AMA's or being mentioned in more and more places it started ti rise in growth exponentially, as Andreas Antonoupolos said, social media platforms need a certain amount of users who know people who are there until they give it a proper try. After that threshold is crossed the userbase goes vertical cause about everyone joins.

Comparing Steem to Reddit would be like.
On Reddit you spend time, read posts, read comments and sometimes interact. If everyone would just be reading and never using it, there would be no comments. People are commenting not just because they get worthless karma points, they want to comment. Say something funny, get recognition/attention. Inform someone of how things really are, write about some interesting things in your life and compare with others, get rewarded karma points. Say opinions and have debates, get rewarded for your valuable time with karma points. There's nothing wrong with that, but wouldn't it be great if you could get rewarded for your time?

On Steem, every community could reward anyone for any possible activity.
Imagine you find your favorite community on Steem, how quickly you could meet an insane amount of people who share your same interests from all parts of the world - no restrictions. The miracle of being able to send anyone in the world a steem within seconds, that person being able to use it to buy food within seconds, a lot of people unfortunately forget this part. It's not particularly their fault, they either live in a developed country where they've never had problems with their bank (although statistically that is very unlikely cause everyone hates their banks). Finding content or answers that you could've never imagined just of the difference that a knowledgeable person at the right place at the right time didn't go "meh it would take way too long time to respond" which is a likely possibility even knowing he'd get inflated 10k karma points.

Unrelated but can you imagine the feel of an early Redditor getting their karma points inflated? I know they are worthless but just compare it to crypto if they ever decided to airdrop on their users. Oh great, the 100k karma points I had are worth 10x less now just because they decided to change the algorithm of how voting works making them give out 10x as much karma. Even on a centralized point system that's worthless, they show you what centralization does. If Vitalik had enjoyed Reddit as much as he did World of Warcraft, this change would've made him drop it and look for a solution, which incidentally is what ticked him off about the company nerfing his Warlock so he created Ethereum.

The best part with Steem is, you don't even have to create an account and look for communities, that's just a bonus. You could be using an app your friend told you to try and you like that app so much that you use it daily and one day you find a link beside the play button that say "try out our new game - you can login with the same account". "Oh that's cool, I can use the same account, wonder how that works" as you google "Steem coin apps" and find a world of apps, communities, people, businesses and anything you could have imagined.

Not only does it take a long time for social media platforms until the userbase explodes, they will take a long time until you will find (d)apps that wouldn't even work on other social media platforms or mobile apps you used to use. They would have functions that due to the censorship resistant blockchain and the rewardpool, they could offer you a much wider array of choices. Many of these are not invented yet and it's just normal for new tech to mainly attempt at taking down similar current giants because they can. I'm mostly excited about dapps that will be "blockchain only", those inventions are gonna take things to the next level.

To go back to the title of this post, for those that managed to read this far. I've been thinking about cross-posting onto Reddit as that's the only other platform I've ever used for fun for a long time. So I was wondering what your thoughts would be on that? If any people with Reddit accounts would like to follow me, I'll leave my account address in the comments. As you know lately I've just been trying to maintain the subreddit while working on restarting OCD in a new manner. I think it could be interesting to grow a following there and make sure the subreddit has some good use for people asking questions or posting their share of news into it. It certainly wouldn't hurt.

I've also noticed the amount of spam in the comments having gone down a lot after HF20 or is that just cause of low price? :) Nice to still see a lot of activity from the current userbase and dapps either migrating or being built on Steem at a time like this! I can tell you it's a lot more than the all time lows. :)

PS. I've also noticed I get even less spammers if I don't add an image to my post, wonder what that's all about.

Sort:

I only really ever used Reddit to consume information and not really engage as I never felt the value of doing so for myself (I know, selfish). I really wasn’t ever open to putting myself open to trolls given some of the comments I had seen. However, the Steem model attracted me as if felt as if something was being built. I feel that I am right as I have seen the many DApps come online like @actifit and @steemmonsters while I never go to Reddit much anymore. Spam is done thanks to the resource credit cost of doing so which is great!

I think most platforms have learned by now that you can't just "ban" trolls, they will find a way every time even if you have paywalls. If they want to troll enough they will find a way to do so. Here we don't attempt to ban or block them, but you can mute them and never accidentally reward them in the future. The majority will do so too if they want it enough and the people that don't just waste everyone's time will get the better deal out of it. :)

I've never looked into posting on Reddit, and now after reading your post, I don't think I ever will. Karma points sound really dumb. Why don't they reward you for your karma points? They could at least throw you a gift card or some coupons every now and then. It's like likes on FB, but it just takes more work to get them. No thanks lol. ;)

What's crazy is, your karma points don't even have an advantage in the influence of their site! Literally worthless.

Kinda like the upvotes I'm giving out right now. Lol. 😂

Lol! I'm in the same boat.

Where's my Kama Curation rewards :(

Followed you on Reddit.

Yo man, cross-post the shit out of it because you are promoting Steem blockchain that way! For me, the only reason to stay on other platforms is to bring people closer to STEEM.

I am starting to make some progress aftwr few months of a heavy promotion on FB. People are asking about Steem. That's the thing we want, isn't it?

Even if they don't join immediately, it's good to put a Steem thought in their head ;)

I only don't like cross-posting on blockchains. I dunno, I just don't think it's good :)

Ps how can I buy steem account without waiting? And can I choose a name when I buy it? I know there are some apps that allows that.

how can I buy steem account without waiting?

Check out steeminvite.com, oracle-d also have their own account creation tool now I believe and other dapps too like steemmonsters and steemhunt.

Thanks. I'll see via Oracle-D, he's doing a good job here.

Peace out!

Then there's always anonsteem.

Just don't pull a Jerry. I'm not a Reddit user myself, but they are a pretty big site. A few extra users here from there might be good. But we don't even have communities yet, despite Steemit's name seemingly being a ripoff of Reddit.

Well, I took my time to read and I've gotten quite a handful of info on Reddit that I thought I ever known. Cross posting is good, I've few friends using it but then it can be quite monotonous at times, but you could try working your way around it.

I've had an account on Reddit. I think I might want to dust of some dusts on it....

The market hasn't been favorable and activities are kinda really based on value. I've lost quite some zeal, but seeing your posts at times lifts me up that I want to check out what's up.

Then also, I think the hard fork reduced the spamming to a great deal but partly still goes to the downtrend in the market. Best regards @acidyo

I've never been on Reddit, so it makes no sense if I would start doing it, but I would love for long-standing users on any platform to start talking about or cross-posting to Steem. We're in a phase of transferring people from the 'old' platforms to the 'new' ways of doing things, but for that to happen people should see their peers 'move'. So I guess if you've been there for almost 8 years people will at least recognize your name, which makes them start following you now (because they can) and then seeing you're active here as well.

(And have way cooler content and engagement here of course :P)

How many STEEM can you buy with 132,317 Karma Points?

0 :(

maybe there's a black market price on it somewhere... there will always be dark markets out there to use your worthless karma points as leverage for advertising stuff/scams.

LOL! 'How I converted my Karma Points for STEEM' would make a great thread on Reddit :P #challenge

I think even better and plausible could be "how I converted my karma points for Steem delegation" :)

There's still a lot of spammers out there, a portion of my time goes into fighting the abuse via @steemflagrewards. You should come over and have a look at how much crap we deal with.

I wish I had the time, had a lot of fun with reporting stuff to steemcleaners a year ago or so.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!! I've given you an upvote and left you this amazing automated comment!!

Merry Christmas Bernie!
