๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ‘ Would You Consider Being a Vigilante? ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝโค๏ธ

in #life โ€ข 7 years ago

Think of all the people who get kidnapped, mugged, raped, and even murdered daily...

Thatโ€™s a lot of people! Would you consider risking it all to save people you donโ€™t even know? Would you put it all on the line, to save even 1 life?

This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately.

There is just so much evil and so much unnecessary violence in the world today... And due to the Diffusion of Responsibility, people are actually less likely to act in a time of need, because they feel โ€œthatโ€™s somebody elseโ€™s jobโ€, or โ€œsomebody else will step in and help; I donโ€™t have to.โ€

Thatโ€™s bullshit.

The average police response time can be over 5 minutes! It takes 1 second to get shot or stabbed, therefore, I think that there need to be more people out on the streets who feel that they can help in a time of need. Iโ€™m not saying you have to actively seek out scumbags, but Iโ€™m saying you should feel capable of helping in a time of need! See a person in an alley getting taken advantage of? Donโ€™t just stand there, do something!

Disclaimer: I am a pacifist, but I believe in self-defense and defending those in need.

Please comment your thoughts on this! It is a very intriguing topic, and believe it or not, not all heroes wear capes! Would you consider this? Do you have what it takes? I want this to be an open discussion!

This is a difficult subject, that has a lot of aspects that have to be concidered.
Of course its no question that everyone should at least call help - the police, ambulance or whatever is needed - when seeing a person in danger. Sadly too often people pretend to not having seen anything, not wanting to get involved in anything. That is obviously wrong and selfish.
A direct intervention in a crime in progress is another issue, which contains many problems. It mostly means having to apply force, it can bring you into the position of getting injured or even breaking the law yourself. Its always a question what you are able to do and what the law allows you to do, which can differ a lot from country to country.
Vigilantes are a different story again. usually that are groups of people who feel threatened by criminal activities around them. That is usually a sign that the official law enforcement has failed in doing their job.
Unfortunately vigilantes have a tendency to get overambitious and make mistakes, and then cause harm to innocent people. Thats why I generally dislike the idea of vigilantes.

You are right, there are definitely a lot of variables, many of which are geographic or political. And in the end everything needs to be covered by our right to self-defense. Either that or you need to be able to run very, very fast. ๐Ÿ˜

Well, self defense is one thing, but intervening in a crime in progress is another. You better know exactly what the law is permitting in such cases, before you act.
I dont know what country you are from and what the law says there, but here in Germany you always walk a thin line if you do stuff like that. Its possible that you end up in prison, although you only wanted to stop a criminal.

Yeah thatโ€™s pretty ironic lol Iโ€™m pretty sure that if you end up getting caught up with somebody who was commiting a violent act, and they start turning violent towards you, thatโ€™s by definition defending yourself if you are attacked by them first and you retaliate. And with that being said, it needs to be a serious crime with a victim to really warrant this. Obviously we should go kicking ass for people not paying for parking or not picking up their dogโ€™s feces or anything like that ๐Ÿ˜„ But if I saw somebody getting mugged, or raped, or kidnapped, I would have to do something!

Yes, all true. But lets say, you see someone breaking into your neighbour's house (them not being at home) - should you go (after calling the police) and try to arrest the burglar? And may be he, um... hurts himself a bit in the process. The police will say you should not have done that, putting yourself in danger, injuring the poor burglar (he is only doing his job, right) and interfering in their work.
But then the burglar would have been gone by the time the police arrives.

Yeah LOL the โ€œpoor burglarโ€ could have the upper hand if heโ€™s not acting violent. In that situation, in the USA, I feel like most people would just call the cops and then do nothing. But there is the option of restraining them and doing what is called a โ€œcitizens arrestโ€ where you basically arrest them before the cops even get there, and you can bring them in to the local police HQ or jail.

Iโ€™m glad youโ€™re thinking about these variables! I hope you never have to step into a violent situation, but on the off chance that you do, I hope that you make the right decisions and end up saving somebody in need! ๐Ÿ˜„โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ

Yes, I hope so, too.

But that's what the whole vigilante thing is about. Right, most people will call the police and else do nothing. Which means the burglar gets away. The chances that the police will find him later on are next to zero. They dont even investigate much in such cases. Not enough funding, lack of man power ect ect...
So most likely he will soon break into another house - may be yours. This is exactly the scenario that sparks vigilante groups to form.

You are so right! Everything from โ€œneighborhood watchโ€ groups to full-blown Local Militias. I agree with both. I think that people who take advantage of others only have so long before somebody will take advantage of them, or take their life in general. This may sound terrible but I think itโ€™s the way of life. If you have more enemies than you have friends, itโ€™s only a matter of time before somebody does to you, what you have been doing to other people! To some, it may seem cynical, however I call it realistic. Back in high school, I used to steal shit all the time (from gas stations, convenience stores, etc) and then I realized people were starting to steal from me, and not only that, but I realized I was being an ASSHOLE to people who were just like me, just trying to get by. I was stealing from people with families, friends, etc.

It was at this point, several years ago, that I realized it didnโ€™t matter if I was โ€œgetting away with itโ€, what actually mattered is WTF I was doing! I was destroying my own karma, and bringing negative energy into my life. Nowadays, I sacrifice everything for those in need. I feel much better living a better life, and if need be, I would put my life on the line for somebody in need of saving. Thereโ€™s something beautiful about stepping in at the right time to help somebody, and we should all feel this overwhelming urge to help from time to time! โค๏ธ

Great post, its a sad world we live in especially for the folks who have decalcified their pineal gland like i have with distilled water. We see a lot of sad things peppered in with all the beauty. I just started to follow you and i upvoted you too! I also checked out some of your other posts. Keep up the good work!

You are so right, people who have awokened, such as us, have to see thru the bullshit for others. Once you wake up, thereโ€™s no going back to sleep ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜ Thanks for your support! Most people donโ€™t bring up the pineal gland with me LOL youโ€™re gonna love my page! Iโ€™ll give you a follow also. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

I agree that it is important to have life competence, which requires a number of skills. Self-defense is high at the top of the list, in my opinion.

Even having basic training in something like jiu jitsu, krav maga, or kung fu is a great place to start. If I ever have kids and a wife, they're all getting that along with some other essential skills that I think are pretty necessary.

Youโ€™re so right Jakob! I could see you dodging some bullets and busting some ass in an alley in Denver ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ’ฏ

It isn't far from the truth, unfortunately. I have been robbed at gunpoint, behind a very nice restaurant (back when I lived in Houston). I have had several "close encounters" of this variety, which I have fortunately managed to outwit in a number of ways.

I've been told that's due to the harsh oppositions in my natal constitution, but I digress... ^_^

Situational awareness and a little bit of martial arts savvy is something helpful for each of us, especially if we find ourselves in anything such as you described.

Jakob are you trained in martial arts? If not how do you feel about the gun laws in Colorado? I hear it is Open-Carry, down here in the Springs at least!

No lie, I would fuck somebody up to save one of my friends from a dangerous situation! I would blow HOT STEEM in their eyes! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’ฆโ˜ ๏ธ

I have some training in martial arts and I have been planning to train more. The past month I was checking out some studios around here where I may resume.

Gun laws are a whole other thing. It is only concealed carry here in Denver, but I see people packing them around whenever I go camping.

I have been learning firearms, myself. I have some friends who are skilled due to lengthy military backgrounds and one being a Sargent for Denver Police, which has been handy.

I think it's important to know how to handle weapons, even if you do not own them. It's surprising how many people have weapons they aren't competent with. In these situations, it is potentially more dangerous to have a weapon.

I am more interested in knowing how to de-escalate situations that may arise, personally. I find that I feel safer knowing how to get out of a situation, whether it's a combo of what I say and how I am able to be both offensive and defensive.

Bro Jakob your responses are always on-point!
You are so right, that if people don't know how to handle a gun, they either shouldn't, or should learn to immediately. And you are also right that getting out of a situation is better than escalating it if possible.
It would be cool to go to a shooting range with you sometime (maybe before the Steemit Meetup this Wednesday?)
I have a .38 Special Revolver, which is really fun to shoot because there's almost no recoil at all when firing. Great gun to gain experience on.
I also want to learn martial arts but I don't know where to start.

Hey man, I would love to hit a range with you some time. Weds is tight for me, but the weekend looks better for that.

Def looking forward to Weds. And if you're looking for a place to train, I know some guys out here in Denver who have a nice studio where I will prob be training soon. Looking for a way to manage another thing into my schedule! :D

I will follow you just cuz this is an awesome post i like it!

LOL thank you (:
Many more awesome posts to come!

Thanks Ahmad! Would you consider being a Vigilante, if you could save an innocent life? ๐Ÿค”

I don't think it's necessarily that you have to be a vigilante, because in old civilizations everyone was supposed to take care of their neighbors, friends, and family. It was so important that it was in all the old religions.

Another phrase from every old religion is โ€œdo unto others as you would have them do unto youโ€ or some variant of that, but that doesnโ€™t mean people take the advice!

Yes, in a perfect world ruled by common sense, we wouldnโ€™t need to defend ourselves or other people from anything. But we live in a world where itโ€™s almost incentivized to take advantage of others if it makes your situation better. Know what I mean?

Interesting post! And to answer your question, yes I could swing that no issues. Too much evil in the world, I agree, and it needs to change. Unfortunately, people have become lazy, or just do not care to look up from their smart phones to notice the world around them.

Have a great night. :-)

Looks like not all of us are so asleep, and some of us see the world how it really is...
You have an equally good night! ๐Ÿ˜œ

Indeed, it is a slow process, but some are becoming aware of the real issues at hand. Just need to get more people unplugged from the system. One can only hope that the truth will become a virus, and people start standing up instead of kneeling.

I will, and you do the same.

I am Mexican what's your superpower?
In Mexico we have a low say that if you can help you most help. Not a lot of Mexicans apply the low but in this last aercuake people that could help. Help

My superpowers are that Iโ€™m half Cuban, I can smell bullshit from a mile away, I can run fast, I can lift heavy weight, and my gun fires bullets at over 700 feet per second! ๐Ÿ˜„ If there was an earthquake near me I would be doing everything I could to help out. I agree with your philosophy! Y la proxima vez, puede comentar en espaรฑol tambien! ๐Ÿ˜„โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡บ
