I don't think it's necessarily that you have to be a vigilante, because in old civilizations everyone was supposed to take care of their neighbors, friends, and family. It was so important that it was in all the old religions.
Another phrase from every old religion is “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” or some variant of that, but that doesn’t mean people take the advice!
Yes, in a perfect world ruled by common sense, we wouldn’t need to defend ourselves or other people from anything. But we live in a world where it’s almost incentivized to take advantage of others if it makes your situation better. Know what I mean?
